Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1974 solo album from the former Soft Machine member. Ayers' solo material reflected a folksier, lazier, and gentler turn than Soft Machine. He was often compared to Syd Barrett and is never less than enjoyable and original, veering from singalong ditties and pleasant, frothy Folk ballads to dissonant improvisation. This reissue of The Confessions Of Dr Dream features seven bonus tracks: four taken from a July 1974 John Peel session, plus non-LP singles and b-sides. EMI. 2009.

I remember buying this album in the summer of 1974 in Dublin - I liked the laminate embossed sleeve, I liked Island Records as a label and I liked the price - two quid. But when I got it home and played it - I just didn't get it. I didn't know what to make of the disparate song styles nor did I like the really heavy drug-addiction references that permeated so many of the tracks - especially the 4-part suite on Side 2. But of course across time, and several plays, I grew to love it - and even though I traded other albums in second hand shops to feed my music addiction - I never parted with my two pound deal.

Here's the breakdown...

Back in the 60s, Kevin Ayers had to be one of the sexiest Englishmen on the planet (along with Syd Roger Barrett and Eric Clapton). In fact, he fronted The Soft Machine as singer and bassist at the same time that Syd Barrett was ruling The Floyd. I first purchased this album on vinyl waaaay back in the late 70s. Found it in a bargain bin @ Jimmy's Music World for $1.99, and the minute I saw the cover knew I'd struck the jackpot. Cover art (front and back) is striking, but in its CD format you don't get the full impact. After having this record packed up and currently unable to access my beloved turntable, I decided to buy the CD. At first, I made the mistake of ordering the 8 song version instead of this compilation which includes 15 tracks. Now, w/ limited Kevin Ayers available, who wouldn't want the full version?

Serious session players perform on this album and include Mike Oldfield, Steve Nye and Ollie Halsall. That said, the musicianship is outstanding. Also, you get a nice little booklet detailing Kevin Ayers' back story. Although the print is miniscule, it's a welcome touch to elaborate on a musician who's sadly often overlooked.

Kevin Ayers offers a nice variety of songs on this. Some are light hearted w/ a sense of humor and others like "It Begins with a Blessing and Ends with a Curse" are downright sinister. The sinister side of Kevin is seductively sexy, and even as a young man, Kevin's vocals hit the lower register like no other. Checked out available Ayers on video. You see Kevin Ayers commanding the stage in spectacular fashion, looking like a troubadour with a dash of frosted purple lipstick. The clip was filmed at L'Olympia in France, and before the performance Kevin Ayers speaks some delightfully perfect French.

Kevin ayers was the dr feelgood at the time(mid 70 's London,ENGLAND ) . You get some classic tracks like everybody's sometime and some people'sall the time blues with fab guitar solo from mike oldfield . I love "see you later" philosophy and Kevin's voice and musicains (soft machine circle) . There is a version of Lady rachel and stop this train from the "joy of the toy " album. Kevin's talent like syd barrett and richard thompson is hard to put into words - very dry humor sarcastic pholosophy great musical innovator and deep voice . He is a star that was never understood . shiny star that will shine on in my mind
