After thoroughly enjoying Debra Dean's novel THE MADONNAS OF LENINGRAD, I eagerly turned to her collection of short stories, CONFESSIONS OF A FALLING WOMAN. Based on her experiences and characters met while working as a young actor in New York, these stories are fantastic! She has a keen ear for dialogue, a mastery of irony, and her character development is inspired. Both of these books continue to come back to mind, long after I read them. Dean is reportedly working on a second novel--I can't WAIT!!

Each one a Gem,
This review is from: Confessions of a Falling Woman: And Other Stories (P.S.) (Paperback)
Debra Dean has offered a collection of unique short stories that causes one to turn the page eager to read the next line still hoping that the little book will never end! What a thrill to find such an intimate group of tales that carry her beautiful voice to the reader, much as she was able to do in her novel, "Madonnas of Leningrad". I anxiously await her next offering. Her ideas are fresh and her experiences somewhat unique despite the fact that many of her readers can relate to them. The language itself is never stale and her imagery often beautiful and moving. She truly has her own "voice". She brings us wonderful insight through her stories that I am sure is somewhat rooted in her own experience. Brava!

Dean Rocks,
This review is from: Confessions of a Falling Woman: And Other Stories (P.S.) (Paperback)
I'm not a short-story reader as a rule, but I loved Madonnas so much I grabbed this s.s. collection up when it came out. Dean writes with such wisdom and grit here that the book becomes both a joy and a penance. You ache for the characters; you want to talk about it with smart, soulful friends and you want her next book. Like yesterday! Debra?

Wow! I am not a huge fan of short stories as a rule; Ms. Dean writing is exceptional. Without exception, each story is thoughtful, all characters are believable, subtle and well developed. I found that her voice whether male or female to be without sexual prejudice. A quick read that I couldn't put down. I recommended it to our bookclub.

I was not at all impressed with this book. It was most depressing and would not recommend it.
