The best book so far on getting a job in a lousy economy, April 5, 2010
This review is from: Confessions of a Hiring Manager: Sage Advice for Fearless Job Seekers and Career Changers in a Confused Economy (Perfect Paperback)
Hiring manager J.T. Kirk has done the world a service by providing hiring insights from his 20-plus year career as a hiring manager in several industries and in different disciplines within those industries. Kirk first takes the reader from developing a strategy for a job search or career change, and then through several annotated examples of both good and bad resumes and cover letters. He follows up with chapters on learning how to control the job interview (not just survive it) and terrific suggestions, which are from actual examples, for negotiating the highest possible salary and compensation package.
Of key importance to returning military veterans is the chapter that shows returning U.S. Armed Forces personnel how to transform their military skills, knowledge, and experience into a language and expertise that civilian hiring managers understand and need. He has several examples that clearly illustrate how ex-military folks need to readjust their thinking, their language, and their demeanor for the civilian job market.
Kirk also offers his advice on performing temp work, contracting work, and even working for free where state goverments have such programs. Kirk speaks from his own experience in each and every chapter and offers hard-hitting and focused advice on how to get the attention of hiring managers, no matter what industry or professsion you are in, and regardless of the state of the economy.
The book has 11 chapters and three appendixes, including job assistance websites and information for veterans and others (Appendix A), a very good cover letter and resume checklist (Appendix B), and how to have J.T. Kirk collaborate with you to put together what he calls a "Professional Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Portfolio" that will get the attention of hiring managers.
Kirk's website at (...) offers free online assessments for cover letters, resumes, interviewing strategies, salary negotiating strategies, converting military experience to civilian skills, and job search strategies. Lots of free downloadable tip sheets as well as a link to his blog at (...).
If you want the low-down on getting hired or changing careers for 2010, get your advice from a former hiring manager and not business writers, career coaches, or resume writers. They just can't offer the insight from the other side of the hiring desk that comes from the hiring manager.

Great Advice, September 12, 2010
This review is from: Confessions of a Hiring Manager: Sage Advice for Fearless Job Seekers and Career Changers in a Confused Economy (Perfect Paperback)
J.T. Kirk provides more than 20 years experience as a hiring manager in the pages of the book for job seekers and for those who are looking for a career change.
Different chapters in the book include:
- Résumés - tips on making yours stand out
- Cover letters - what works, what doesn't
- Developing strategies for either a job search and/or career change
- Supplemental documentation
- Interviewing techniques
- Other available options such as temporary jobs
- Veterans transitioning back into the civilian market.
Mr. Kirk does not guarantee employment simply on the basis of reading his book. He does, however, provide job seekers the right tools to have a greater chance of success. Those tools are provided based on his many years of experience as a hiring manager. A wise job seeker will read the book and apply the advice in his or her own job search.
