Editorial Reviews

Review

“Here now is the only book about horseshoeing you will ever need. Ron Tatum has created a magic mix of great information and terrific stories—all told with superb writing and fun spice.”—Jim Lehrer, executive editor and former news anchor for The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour

“As I read of Ron's experiences as a horseshoer, my own personal catastrophes kept popping up. It was such a good story that I filmed it for my television program. The book was great, but Ron never answered the eternal question, ‘Why do some people become horseshoers?’ For myself, I can only explain it by asking, ‘Why do some dogs chase cars?’”—Baxter Black, Cowboy Poet, Former Large Animal Veterinarian, and part-time horseshoer

“It is not often you come across a book where ‘spending more time under a horse’ strikes you as not only sane but sage. But here is such a book, where a born raconteur horseshoes his way to wisdom with self-deprecating humor, cowboy canniness, and lightly worn professorial erudition. By the evidence of these pages Ron Tatum has lived at least nine lives, each one enriching the others, all of them grounded by the world of horses and the human characters he encounters there. He is a true American original.”—Ger Killeen, winner of the 2006 and 2007 Gertrude Stein Awards for Innovative Poetry

“I found Tatum’s stories to be compelling and funny, charming and wry. I was caught up in his voice, his attitude about the world. This is very strong stuff.”—John Calderazzo, Department of English, Colorado State University

“Life’s real meaning tumbles out of each story and envelops the reader with laughter, tears, and peace. A wonderful read for anyone who still cares to reflect.”—Denis G. Lawrence, retired vice president for academic affairs, Marylhurst University

It was a joy to experience it!!
Rick
For example, the end of the book is a lengthy section on kids' rodeo events, which had nothing to do with the author and nothing to do with horseshoeing.

Dr. Tatum is entertaining in all aspects of his writing.

I know the wife of the author, and he was kind enough to autograph a book jacket and send it to me. They live in Oregon and I live in Illinois. You would think, from the title, that it would be something you wouldn't want to read. Wrong! This guy could make any profession funny and interesting. I learned a lot about his trade, and boy is it interesting! You'd never think that shoeing a horse could be so hard, dangerous, and challenging! But it's the way he writes the book that'll keep up your interest and have you rolling on the floor laughing! It's a must read!

Confessions of a Horseshoer by Ron Tatum is a great read. Humorous and anecdotal this book shows the author as a renaissance man who has combined horseshoeing and an academic career. Dr. Tatum is entertaining in all aspects of his writing. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Who would have ever thought that stories about horse shoeing could be so hilarious, insightful, and informative. I mean, really, who knows anything about this craft? Well, now we do and boy what an adventure. Then with the bits of general wisdom thrown in, well, it's one of my all-time favorite books! I now know what I'll be giving friends and family for Christmas 2012. My advice: don't miss this one!! (I laughed out loud deep from the belly when the author said, "nards!")

Confessions of a Horseshoer is a fascinating, funny, entertaining read. Dr. Tatum captures a unique lifestyle (Ferrier and Professor - really??!!) with humor, candor and just a bit of intrigue. The pages really do turn on this fun, unique, fascinating book. It was a joy to experience it!!

One of the best books I have ever read. Lots of funny stories about the Farrier profession, along with all the mishaps and things that can go wrong. Ron is a fantastic writer, who would have thought that a book about horseshoeing could keep me turning pages.
