Beautiful,
By Mr G (Lisbon) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Confessions (Audio CD)
Nobody sings a song better than Joyce Breach, a criminally underexposed New York artist whose albums for Audiophile represent the highest standards both in musicianship and taste. Ms Breach is a loving exponent of the best of the American songbook, and she draws her material from the Broadway, jazz and cabaret repertoires.
Vocally she is warm and totally natural, her singing unencumbered by theatrics or flash. This deceptively casual style works extremely well on the dusky ballads she loves, revealing the amazing quality of the great songwriters while never making any effort to "sell" the song. Ms Breach's repertoire rarely needs any selling, anyway: this particular album contains jewels by Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart and Berlin, but she makes a point of finding songs which are not done to death - witness the neglected Gershwin classic "Boy! What Love has Done To Me" or Berlin's rarely heard "Be Careful, It's My Heart". For those fans of Antonio Carlos Jobim, his magical "Song of the Jet" is on the playlist. As well as the masters, was also hear gorgeous songs from more specialised cabaret writers, like Francesca Blumenthal's heartbreaking "Lies of Handsome Men" or the Alec Wilder/Loonis Mcglohon stunner "Blackberry Winter". Speaking of Mr McGlohon, he is musical director for this album and reveals himself to be a singer's best friend, a wonderfully sympathetic and tasty accompanist. Ms Breach also includes his gorgeously elegaic "The Wine of May".

A great voice and a great interpreter,
By Country Girl "bookcruncher" (Middleburg, VA USA) - See all my reviews

I've been lucky to hear Joyce in several small venues, where the warmth of her voice and the incredible precision of her interpretations just wrap you in her performance. This album and "Songbird" are neck and neck to be my favorite. I completely agree that it is truly unfortunate that while Joyce is well known among the real afficionados of female jazz vocals she hasn't enjoyed a wider popular acclaim, because her voice and her performance are really a cut above. If you enjoy Diana Krall or Jane Monheit, give a listen to Joyce and settle back to enjoy.
