Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A promising setup builds to a somewhat disappointing outcome in this first contemporary romance from Ashley, who's best known for her pirate romances (e.g., The Care & Feeding of Pirates; The Pirate Next Door). When Brenda Scott, a shy DJ at an unpopular San Diego radio station, gets dumped by her rich, controlling boyfriend, Larry, she comforts herself by downing martinis at a New Year's party. The next morning, she's shocked to find a stranger in her bed, but Nick, the man in question, dashes away before she can find out what occurred. Finally liberated from Larry, Brenda decides to trade in her full-coverage underwear for some scanty panties and a bold new personality. When she bumps into Nick again, she lands a second date with him. Later, she turns on the radio and learns that Nick is the new DJ at a rival station, where he sends out a song asking Brenda to call him back. She does return the call, over the air, starting a public flirtation that grabs all of San Diego's attention. Though her character is occasionally amusing, Brenda's transformation from a nervous girl into a sexy free spirit is predictable, as is the ensuing trouble that develops. The DJ rivalry adds some intensity to the romance, but it never really takes off.

From Booklist

The old Brenda Scott never would have found herself waking up next to a complete stranger. While the new Brenda Scott might not exactly remember all the details of her wild night of passion--including her sexy lover's name--the experience inspires her to jettison her old mousy, quiet self and embrace a new daring, wild personality with an insatiable appetite for expensive lingerie. When a rival San Diego DJ, Nick Jordan, announces on air later that week that he is desperately searching for the woman with whom he shared a night of sensual bliss, Brenda realizes she has found her mystery lover. The only problem is deciding which Brenda--old or new--Nick really likes. Best known for her sexy pirate historicals, Ashley brilliantly blends a generous bit of chick-lit sass with a dash of contemporary romance as she amusingly details one woman's efforts to sort out her life in a tale that is surprisingly thoughtful, often quite sexy, and always entertaining. 4.0 out of 5 stars A Funny Read With Memorable Characters!, June 8, 2005
This review is from: Confessions of a Lingerie Addict (Mass Market Paperback)
One of my favorite historical romance authors has taken a detour and for her latest effort has penned a rather quirky chick-lit/contemporary romance that was highly entertaining and fun to read.

Brenda is a woman that has not had the best track record with men, take her latest...Larry. "Mr. Perfect" has it all except for a personality that's not obnoxious oh...and we can't forget that he just dumped Brenda on New Years Eve. Well, she's not going to let that stop her. No way our Brenda is made of much sterner stuff and in a moment of insight decides to head into a very expensive lingerie store in order to console herself. This starts her off on a lingerie addiction that she is only too happy to accomodate. Now if she could just get over the man that she woke up with earlier in the day. Of course Yes, I did say man but you must read the book in order to find out just how mystery man fits in!

Never fear Brenda along with a wonderful secondary cast tell a rather funny tale of finding love where you least expect to find it, with the last person you thought possible. This was a fun chick-lit read and although written in first person not obnoxious in anyway. This is one read that I highly recommend, and I hope that Ms. Ashley continues penning heartwarming contemporaries.

3.0 out of 5 stars Read as a Joke;suprisingly enjoyable, June 5, 2005
This review is from: Confessions of a Lingerie Addict (Mass Market Paperback)
Hokay, I'll admit that being a man, I set out to read this book for laughs because supposedly all romance novels are sappy and cheesy.(Dodges pots and pans thrown by female Amazon members.)
However, to my suprise, this was a pretty good yarn. I cheered for Brenda when she told Larry to piss off. Clarissa and David's quietly developing romance was nice to follow as well.

The members of the old hippie band "Bohemian Love Child" were great supporting characters as well as Brenda's somewhat goofy boss Tony. Nick seemed like a fairly likable male lead.
Only thing I have to complain about is what happened to poor Tim,
the poor morning DJ who Tony talked into bungee jumping and getting in a tank with sharks to boost ratings. It'd be great if Jennifer Ashley did a sort of sequel where poor ol' Tim finds romance.

2.0 out of 5 stars ridiculous - and frankly icky, November 21, 2005
This review is from: Confessions of a Lingerie Addict (Mass Market Paperback)
The beginning of this book was pretty good - but that just made it's downward spiral all the more painful.

I got extremely tired of Brenda's never-ending self-doubt, her mothers 'defiant' public displays of affection with her son's (18 year younger) best friend (I'm sorry, that was just icky and not well done of them - and it's not that the woman is the one old enough to be the others parent. It would be just as inappropriate if it were their father with the daughters best friend) and her obnoxious boss Tony. I wanted to throw the book out somewhere around that horrible scene on the boat - how much dysfunctional, childish behavior do you really want to spend your time reading about?

If half the size, this book may have been a cute read. As it is it's a long drawn out farce.
