5.0 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect Post-Nash Hollies Album, February 24, 2001
By Randall E. Adams (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Confessions of the Mind (Audio CD)
This is the Hollies' third album after the exit of Graham Nash. The Clarke/Hicks/Sylvester version of the group had fully blossomed into its own, so much that it was able to cut a rousing version of a leftover Nash song "Survival of the Fittest." This is the final Hollies album from the bubblegum era and must stand as a landmark of "haute bubblegum" with its Pete Townsend-inspired mini-opera title track and the superb domestic soap operas "Too Young to be Married" and "Little Girl." "Isn't It Nice" proves--thirty years on--to be a timeless motivational ode. The Dylanesque "Lady Please" brings together all of the classic Hollies virtues--clockwork instrumentation, seamless vocals and great sing-along value. For once, the extra orchestration is appropriate wherever placed (except for the bizarre tardy arrival of the brass on "Too Young to be Married.")

This album was recorded at roughly the same time as what may be the Hollies' absolute finest single: "Gasoline Alley Bred." It reaches the same standard and is a must-buy for anyone who enjoys harmony rock and pop.

4.0 out of 5 stars essential hollies, January 15, 1999
This album came out shortly after Graham Nash left to join Crosby and Stills. It contains minor hits like 'too young too be married' and 'man without a heart'. Essential tracks are however the title track, 'Frightened Lady' and 'Survival Of The Fittest'. The vinyl version of this album also contained 'Gasoline Alley Bred' which is missing from the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars a definite favourite, June 1, 2009
This is a really swell album by The Hollies after Graham Nash left to join Crosby, Stills & Nash. This quickly became one of my most favourite Hollies albums so I would definitely recommend it to anyone, especially a Hollies fan. It's got the hit, "Too Young To Be Married" with a wonderful guitar solo by Tony Hicks, and one of my favourites, "Confessions Of A Mind". Of course, I can't forget the first track of the album, "Survival Of The Fittest". All of the songs are worth listening to, as with all Hollies songs. Listening to the samples (if there are samples of this album) would be great, but it would be better to listen to the album as a whole. If you're a Hollies fan, get this album for sure!
