4.0 out of 5 stars Euro Crime Mixed Bag October 24, 2010
Wild East Productions who specialize in Spaghetti Westerns released Volume One of their Euro-crime series -Director Sergio Martino's excellent 'THE VIOLENT PROFESSIONALS' - a few years ago. Now we have Volume 2 as a double bill which touches on diverse themes and are adequate at best. First up is 'CONFESSIONS OF A POLICE CAPTAIN', directed by Damiano Damiani who also touched Spaghetti Westerns -'A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL' and Horror -'THE WITCH' aka 'LA STREGA IN AMORE'. This one has less action for a crime movie but intense acting by Franco Nero and American actor Martin Balsam who butt heads throughout the films running time trying to expose corruption within the legal system. You'll also recognize Arturo Domenici in a subdued slimy performance as a corrupt attorney and the beautiful Marilu Tolo as a mafia moll. The music is by Riz Ortolani in a catchy symphonic score and the great photography by Claudio Ragona is represented well with a beautiful 2.35 widescreen transfer. Up next is Antonio Isasi's 'THE SUMMERTIME KILLER' a vigilante revenge movie which resembles an American crime film due to the presence of Karl Malden , Christopher Mitchum and the drop dead beauty of Olivia Hussey who still has that Juliet quality throughout the films running time. Mitchum's character as a young boy is present at the slaughter of his father by mob thugs and as a grownup vows to kill everyone responsible . Mitchum is O.K. but not as intense as he was in Director Tulio Demicheli's 'RICCO, THE MEAN MACHINE'. Malden would make Dario Argento's 'THE CAT OF NINE TAILS' the same year. Hussey plays the mafioso's daughter who is kidnapped by Mitchum and eventually falls for him. The villainy is hammed up by actor Raf Vallone as Hussey's father. The transfer is 1. Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Italian/Euro crime flicks. August 12, 2011
Verified Purchase

CONFESSIONS OF A POLICE CAPTAIN is the better film of the two included. The print is widescreen but not the greatest quality. I don't think much remastering was done but it was an improvement on the public domain versions. But with Italian crime flicks, I don't need them to look pristine. I like the rough quality.

CONFESSIONS is not an action film. It focuses mainly on corruption in Italy. The dialogue is excellent and if you know anything about Italian politics, it's even more entertaining and intriguing. Franco Nero does an excellent job as does Martin Balsam. The exchange between the two of them was riveting.

SUMMERTIME KILLER is a pretty entertaining euro-crime flick with Christopher Mitchum as a guy out for revenge. And just like many films, revenge is a dish best served cold. Mitchum isn't the greatest actor but for this role he does alright. I'm not sure why they put this movie with CONFESSIONS because they are nothing alike. There are plenty of other great movies that would work great with CONFESSIONS (movies with themes such as political corruption, mafia, etc). Yes, SUMMERTIME KILLER has some organized crime but it takes a backseat to the revenge plot.

It's worth getting this just for CONFESSIONS, though. Honestly, I think it could be a few bucks cheaper (which is why it took me a year to pull the trigger and purchase this) but considering how few Italian crime flicks they put out on DVD, it's worth getting.

2.0 out of 5 stars Confessions of a Police Captain November 13, 2013

I enjoyed Franco Nero in this picture, but the plot is somewhat winding and meandering so that you loose the point of the picture in the first place. I wasn't that interested in the other movies in the package.
