Book Description

November 30, 2004
Every golf course has one. Every golfer knows one. Michael Blaine is the CrossCreek Golf and Country Club sandbagger. On a glorious autumn day in southern Ontario, his Saturday morning playing partners take revenge by strapping him to his golf bag (stuffed with 15 clubs) and tossing him into the pond on the par three 17th hole. As he sinks up to his neck in the pond, he ponders his attitudes, career, and marriage. As each group of golfers plays through from the 17th tee, he tries to enlist a rescue team. Convincing the members and the goose-chasing dog Kaida that he is worth rescuing is about as difficult as any job he has ever faced. Will Mikey admit to his “unplayable lies,” or will he spend the winter in a frozen pond? Tag along on Mikey’s soggy exploration and find golf, business, and relationship lessons in each chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revelations of a Cheater, June 4, 2006

This review is from: Confessions of a Sandbagger (Paperback)
Canadian author J. J. Gowland's "Confessions of a Sandbagger."

Here's the concept: A sandbagger gets tied to his golf bag and tossed in the pond up to his neck in front of the par 3 17th hole, and that's just for openers in J. J. Gowland's comic romp "Confessions of a Sandbagger." There may be no other character in golf fiction quite like Mikey Blaine, the sandbagger you'll like to hate, and maybe even hate that you end up liking a little.

This is a quick and enjoyable read. Gowland definitely knows the game of golf; you find yourself nodding agreement over a variety of the elements, traits, and foibles of the game. I was quite taken with the Chapter 14 tips on sizing up your "opponents" skills just by what clubs are being carried in the bag. Good stuff, very perceptive, with some really fine writing; it moves right along and is often very funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars The author knows golf, April 21, 2006
This review is from: Confessions of a Sandbagger (Paperback)
The author definitely knows golf and the protagonist, a sandbagger, in this easy to read novel is someone you can hate and then feel sorry for.
Sometimes hilarious, sometimes touching we learn how Mikey came to be tied to his golf bag and tossed in a pond and how perceptive he is in convincing other golfers in rescuing him before winter arrives.
The golf tips are accurate.
Copies if this funny easy to read novel make great tournament prize table items.
Enjoy!
