4.0 out of 5 stars Honesty is the Best Policy, August 11, 2010
This review is from: Confessions (Paperback)
Is it possible to save a marriage if each spouse is completely honest with one another?
This debut novel by Sasha Campbell, Confessions, follows the marriages of two lifelong friends. Both of their marriages are in a downward spiral and quickly falling out of control. Nikki is married to Donovan, who is a soldier recently deployed. Her best friend, Trinette, is married to Leon who is a CFO that lives in a different city than his wife.

Nikki is a radio talk show host who gives relationship advice to her listeners. It is quite ironic that Nikki gives advice even though her personal life is in shambles. Under the advisement of Trinette, she decides to date while her husband is away. Trinette, on the other hand, lives the "single" life except when her husband is in town on the occasional weekend.

This book is a page-turner because you want to know what will happen when Donavon comes home. Will Trinette's double life finally catch up with her? Will confessions be made? Will the four of them be honest with their spouses, but more importantly with themselves about their own behavior?
I recommend this book to everyone, especially those that are married who think their secrets will never be exposed.

This book was provided to me courtesy of the author for review purposes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Her Little Secret, November 14, 2010
This review is from: Confessions (Paperback)
In "Confessions," best friends Nikki Truth and Trinette Montgomery's lives are not exactly ideal. Nikki married her high school sweetheart Donovan. Years into their marriage, their happily ever after is now a thing of the past. It's during Donovan's deployment to Iraq that Nikki faces the harsh reality that her marriage is over and that it's time to move on. Enter Kenyon Monroe, Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome.

Trinette is all about Trinette. Trinette is living the lavish life at the expense of others. She has a good, kind, loving husband that takes care of her, but that doesn't stop her from doing her own thing with other men while hubby is away.

I won't go beyond that and spoil the story. Just know that it's worth it to read this engaging novel laced with drama to find out what happens in the lives of Nikki and Trinette. Author Sasha managed to create characters that are likeable, volatile and witty. Told in alternating chapters, the emotions of the characters infuse and drive the story.

Being from St. Louis, I had slight issues with some incorrect names (Webster Grove and St. Louis Bread Factory). Not sure if the author did it intentionally or if it was a mistake, but it was noted by this reader. Even so, it wasn't enough to distract from the strength of the read.

"Confessions" is amusing and delightful. Easily recommendable.

4.0 out of 5 stars What's Done In The Dark Comes To Light, September 4, 2010

This review is from: Confessions (Paperback)
Nikki Truth is the hottest talk show host on late night radio. As soon as Truth Hurts hit the airwaves, the phone lines light up with broken-hearted callers desperately seeking Nikki's magical advice to save their relationships. However, her loyal listeners aren't the only ones who need to build a stronger relationship. Nikki and her husband Donovan have slowly drifted apart and an attempt at reconciliation is futile. Things begin to look clearer over the horizon when she meets Kenyon and he takes care of all her needs, but there's something about him that's too good to be true.

Trinette Montgomery is that ride or die friend every woman wants to have. She and Nikki have been best friends since they were little girls, and they're always in each other's corner. Trinette's driven career goals and the outlandish living arrangements with her husband, adds strain to their marriage. She's determined to get what she wants, no matter what she has to do to get it. When her marriage and her life suddenly take a high-speed nose dive, will she see the error of her ways and repent?

Love, forgiveness, truth, and several other elements set the tone of the debut novel, CONFESSIONS. The strong characterization and the added twists and turns made this book enjoyable for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars the truth does hurt, but it also can set you free!, August 21, 2010
This review is from: Confessions (Paperback)
Confessions
By Sasha Campbell

Why do we make assumptions? Why are we not satisfied with what we have until it's too late?
Nikki Truth, a bookstore owner/radio talk show host dishing out her brand of advice to callers on her show "Truth Hurts!" whose husband has been deployed to Iraq is having marital problems, receives a letter from her husband calling it quits. Nikki makes up her mind to take some of the advice she gives out, and becomes involved with someone else. Does she really find out if she can handle the truth when her assumptions makes an ass of her or when she realizes one of her on air callers took her advice to heart?

Trinette Montgomery, a bonafide shopaholic, always chasing the almighty dollar no matter what sponsor she has to use to get it; but the problem is she's married! Trinette feels it's time for her to get hers, sacrificing to help her husband rise to the top in his career that takes him from St. Louis to Richmond and a CFO position, but Trinette wants to stay put to work on her education and toward a supervisor position at her own job. But when Trinette's dirt comes back to greet her will she learn about real love and forgiveness, or will her greed be the cause of her own destruction?

Nikki and Trinette best friends from forever, both harbor hurts, insecurities, and tragedies. Will their bond be able to handle their personal truths?

I really enjoyed this book, it was crazy, funny, provocative, and serious. This being the author's freshman novel, Sasha Campbell did a wonderful job with her characters and it kept you interested and guessing.
The story takes place in St. Louis, MO. my hometown, and I was easily able to visualize and identify the places mentioned.

I definitely recommend this book, we can all learn a lesson from it, and realize that sometimes the truth does hurt, but it also can set you free!

4.0 out of 5 stars Confessions..., September 2, 2011
This review is from: Confessions (Paperback)
"Confessions" takes readers on a journey of friendship, truth, love and forgiveness.Nikki Truth and Trinette Montgomery are both best friends. The two are as different as night and day.Nikki is a radio talk show host who tells it like it is when it comes to relationship advice but when it comes to her marriage, thats another story. She has been going through the motions with her husband,Donovan who has been deployed.Nikki hasnt heard from him and wonders if she should move on with her life. She meets Kenyon and feels he is too good to be true. Will Donovan creep back into the picture or will Nikki continue what she has with Kenyon?

Trinette Montgomery has a job of her own but she is married to a loving and successful man who adores her.He travels alot leaving Trinette with too much time on her hands so when her hubby is away Trinette is gonna play. What her husband dont know wont hurt, right?Trinette lives a lavish life at the expense of other men. What Trinette wants, Trinette gets. Will Trinette's husband find out about her double life? Will Trinette wake up before it's too late.

I like how the characters were faced with problems and you see what they went through to solve the problem and the steps they took to help them get their lives back on track. It wasnt half stepped like with most books where you blink and you miss something.Confessions was a quick and enjoyable read and I would recommend it to others.I look forward to reading more of Sasha Campbell's work in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Traitorous Tug, April 30, 2011
By
This review is from: Confessions (Paperback)
Nikki Truth is the boisterous voice of HOT 97 WJPC, with all of the sound advice on how to make a relationship work or how to end it. Too bad she's not listening to her own words as she is estranged from her husband, Donovan. When a letter comes saying that they should just go their separate ways, Nikki is distraught. Though she knows that their marriage is in trouble, she'd hoped for the best. When she meets a new guy, Kenyon, who is attentive to all of her needs, Nikki believes that she's been blessed with a second chance. That is until Donovan makes his way back from Iraq with the intents on putting their lives back in order. Will Nikki choose her marriage or her newfound boo?

Trinette Montgomery is married to a successful man who travels a lot. Luckily he's lives in Richmond, VA, and Trinette in St. Louis, MO. She's able to live a single life twenty-nine days a month, enjoying risqué affairs without fear of being found out. When Leon, her husband, has finally had enough of her spoiled and selfish ways, Trinette is forced to take a long look in the mirror. While she may be fabulous on the outside, her traumatic childhood is dictating her life. Can she finally put the past behind her and work on her restoring her self worth?

CONFESSIONS by Sasha Campbell is fabulous! I love the friendship between the two and the way in which the characters grow, especially Trinette.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some things you can't take to your grave...Sisterhood Book Club review, November 9, 2010
By
This review is from: Confessions (Paperback)
It's a new author on the scene and her name is Sasha Campbell, she's getting down and showing her talent in her story Confessions. In Confessions the characters Trinette and Nikki grows larger, stronger and more impressive along with the success that have down falls. Both ladies are married and fighting off the demons to keep the union together, the battle gets very rough as the story is told.

Trinette life starts off rough from her childhood with her mother neglect and her uncle molesting her at a young age. As time goes on in Trinette adulthood the table turns for the good, Leon comes in her life and they become a union. All the walking in the dark over the years with her blinders on contributes to not truly seeing the love and kindness of a good man. Trinette is not deprived at all she's a very well educated social worker with degrees but is dumb in the relationship department. The road of destruction is underneath her feet and she not knowing until the love of her life Leon had enough of her mess she keep dishing out. The truth of the matter comes to the light and someone is out to get her, but will Trinette be able to save herself and her union?

Nikki is this hot radio host that solves everyone problems but her own. Nikki and Donovan is a union that takes a turn for the worst when their baby girl is killed. Instead of facing the problem in their lives they go on day to day like nothing had happen and it slowly peels the layers away of the hurt of blame of the death. The letters of Nikki to Donovan in Iraq gets lost that leads to giving up on one another to the point of talking about the big D. As time goes on Nikki meets the man name Kenyon and let him know off hand that she's a married lady, he comes off as this gentleman that understands and just want to be there for her. The smooth operator fools the hell out of me once Nikki and Donovan decides to give their union another try. That's when Satan shows up and the fire of hell opens up to destroy Nikki world. Will Nikki world go up in flames or will she be able to conquer Satan?

I highly recommend this book to all readers; this is a master piece you could enjoy in one sitting. The pages turns and pulls you into the lives of normal everyday people that make you say hmmm... The author was kind enough to send us a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sasha Campbell Shows That Real "Confessions" Are Good For The Soul, September 14, 2010
This review is from: Confessions (Paperback)
Author Sasha Campbell gives us a portrait of two women who seemingly have everything they could want, only to find out what it really means to be without.

Confessions is one of those books that men probably won't want to read but definitely should read, because it is proof of what we have been saying for so long: some (not all women) can be just as scandalous as what men of accused of.

Nikki and Trinette tell us in their own words, thoughts and actions what they have in life, what they want and what they are willing to do in order to get it. Sometime you can sympathize with them, and others you can be outright frustrated ad angry with them, but I think all of us can relate to who they are in some way.

Confessions is a novel that is just right for the summer and the chill that is coming in the fall. If this is what a debut is like, then author Sasha Campbell is going to be thrilling readers for many years and books to come.
