I can't remember when I have enjoyed a CD more than I enjoyed this one. Laughing out loud is so good for the soul and this did it for me! Not only does Alexander McCall Smith write wonderfully well, but his Confessions are witty, smart and hilarious.

I didn't want to pay the asking price for this hour-long presentation, but I am such a fan of McCall Smith's and I am so glad I did.
This is a live speech that he gave, and the whole thing had me cracking up. He talks about other authors and speech-givers and silly things that he and they do and have done, and reads aloud a few very short portions of his books and talks about them in a really funny way. Really, it wasn't what he talked about, it was the simple fact of his storytelling ability - I was just howling with laughter through the whole thing. I've never heard an author busting a gut reading his own work, but McCall Smith put an even funnier spin on one of the best parts of 44 Scotland Street by laughing through the entirety of it after delivering every line, and the whole thing was just great. My tummy was sore from giggling. The cover of this short audio production really doesn't do it justice. It was completely hilarious and well worth the money. I'll certainly be listening to it again, as I think I laughed too loud the first time and missed a few parts!

In addition to being an extremely talented writer, Alexander McCall Smith is very funny in person. I found his lecture very entertaining.

I just love these characters so much. Every one of them. Even the apprentices. I slip into their world for the duration and savor each word and enjoy each story. I cannot wait for the next one. What a wonderful treat. Delicious reading.

I really enjoyed reading many of McCall Smith's novels and so I was very interested in listening to the author himself speaking! He has such an infectious giggle that it made me giggle to hear him. He did have trouble getting started, I thought, but once he got into the heart of his message, it was very good. You know, he does that when he writes too, has his characters go off on tangents of thought. If you like his books, you will enjoy this inside look into the author's life. If you have not read or do not care for McCall Smith's books, (and not everyone does ) skip this item. As for me, I am glad to own it. I'm sure I'll listen to it again.

Confessions of a Serial Novelist
Being a devoted fan of A. M. Smith's writings (all of them), we were anxious to hear his voice, and we were not disappointed. He is delightful and witty and enjoys his own jokes along with everyone else. We enjoyed this CD as much as any voice CD we've ever heard, and will go back to it over and over again, much as one would a good book. This is a charming man in every sense of the expression.

I listened to this CD several times before sharing it with other fans of Mr. Smith. It is a charming reading which turned Alexander McCall Smith from being my favorite writer into a "friend," or so it feels. I giggled with him while listening to this CD, and then just wanted to "read" it again!

This delightful CD presents Alexander McCall-Smith explaining, in person, how he got started with his series of novels. As I listen to the chuckle that is ever-present in his voice,I understand how he makes his characters come alive in his books. Although at the beginning of the CD he is talking more in generalities, later he explains how some of his characters were developed. This CD is a "must have" for all fans of the '#1 Ladies Detective Agency', '44 Scotland Street', 'Sunday Philosophers'Club', and 'Herr Dr.Professor Igelfeld '. Long may McCall-Smith continue to write and, I hope, produce CD's.
