Book Description

When Mark and Nancy Sheppard began missionary service in Liberia, Nancy had no idea what God would ask of her. Their idyllic first term was followed by the Liberian Civil War and a nightmarish year working among Liberian refugees in the Ivory Coast. Conditions were difficult, expectations overwhelming and the tensions of the war at their doorstep. Fear, self-pity, resentment and depression haunted her. God used Nancy's difficult decision to follow her husband's leadership and remain in refugee work to begin an amazing spiritual journey—one that led to a clearer understanding of biblical womanhood as well as a deeper relationship with the Lord and with her husband. The book chronicles Nancy's journey to true peace in the midst of very difficult circumstances. As God teaches her about genuine service, submission, sincere prayer, reverence and humility, she is totally and completely transformed. The scenarios are unique to Nancy, but every seeking Christian can fully identify with the spiritual lessons.

A unique reading experience, this interactive eBook contains many full color pictures as well as links to pertinent YouTube videos. This Kindle edition of "Confessions of a Transformed Heart" will not disappoint!

(The Youth Edition removes some of the more detailed explanations of the war and Liberian culture that may not be appropriate for younger readers.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Transparency and Honesty October 9, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Nancy and her husband are Baptist Mid Missionaries to Liberia, West Africa. What makes this book great is not just their work as missionaries in a war torn area, often with refugees, but Nancy's transparency, exposing her heart in and around the struggles involving their ministry, faith, marriage and life. All can relate to her struggles as a wife and mother and relationships. She gains freedom, joy and satisfaction through submission, prayer and humility.

A very worthy and straightforwardly heartfelt insight into one person's experience of God's wonderful work in the lives of those who earnestly seek Him in their difficulties in the midst of this cruel and evil world, and of the light and life and love and power He has available to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Liberian history in this book! July 30, 2013
By Ellen
Format:Kindle Edition
This book taught me a lot about the history of Liberia and the way that US history is tied in so closely with theirs. Very interesting stuff!

Nancy's honesty in sharing her utter dependence upon the LORD is
revealed in this book. GOD used the timing of Nancy sharing her story
& crossing paths with my daughter to encourage her as she began to
live in Liberia & go through her own unique challenges. "Confessions
of a Transformed Heart" & Nancy Sheppard were an answer to the prayers
of this Mother as I saw how the LORD encouraged & strengthened my
daughter with bright hope to carry her through life in Liberia. I hope
everyone will come to know Nancy's story of faithful obedience & utter
dependence upon the LORD, and have a heart completely devoted to HIM.
I am grateful for Nancy Sheppard & this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars "confessions of a reader" July 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I absolutely loved this book. It gives you some history of Liberia and the Ivory Coast, which helps you get a great perspective as you read the life of this family's journey. She was honest and transparent with the highs and lows of not just being a missionary but also with being a Christian woman, wife and mother. And I loved how at the end of each chapter she gave a short and concise summary of what God taught her in that "chapter" of her life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the Use of Kindle Capabilities July 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
As I understand it, this is an update which includes use of the Kindle capabilities (works well with the Kindle app for iPad, too). The prologue immediately drew me in, but, in addition to the text, I enjoyed the illustrations and color photographs. Listening (and watching) parts of it read by the author somehow provided a little more insight, too. For verification or additional information, references link directly to related websites.

Of course, you can just read straight through if you want or don't have an internet connection available.

This book is the story of one individual's (a missionary's) journey, so it contains personal thoughts and memories, as well as history and descriptions of local people. As someone who has just moved to Liberia, it is both useful and of particular interest to me. However, I think anyone that might be moving to another country or that enjoys learning about other countries and lifestyles would find it interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puts life in perspective July 18, 2013
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed reading this book about Nancy and her family's life as missionaries in Liberia and the Ivory Coast. It is a straight forward, easy to read account that makes one think about one's own walk with Christ. Americans have been so blessed that much is taken for granted including spiritual things. Nancy, in a simple way that doesn't beg for sympathy, writes what it is like to live without human security and stability and how she was led to rely on Christ. In turn, the lessons she learned helped her to minister to her family and to the needy people in West Africa.

More About the Author

Nancy Sheppard (1960-) was born in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin, and shared her childhood with three brothers and a twin sister. After college graduation she and her husband Mark felt God was calling them to be missionaries to Liberia, West Africa. Following an idyllic first three years of ministry in the interior of that country, the Liberian Civil War began. This plunged the Sheppard family into a ministry they had never imagined--one among war refugees. God used the many years spent in this difficult work to create a new heart in Nancy, and it is out of that heart she writes.

Mark and Nancy Sheppard have been married 33 years and are the parents of six children, ages 5 to 30 years, and the grandparents of three.
