From Booklist
In 1960s provincial France, young Simone Bouvier works in a modest hotel for Mme. Claire, a crusty old woman. When Mme. Claire's golden son Francoise returns from college, Simone falls head over heels for him, and they share an idyllic summer until a beautiful English girl arrives at the hotel. Francoise's obsession with the girl plummets Simone to the depths of jealousy and intense hatred as she is powerless to recapture his love. As the family spirals faster and faster toward tragedy, Simone must choose between staying in an untenable situation and finding a chance for her own happiness elsewhere.
