Editorial Reviews

Review

How can young musicians learn the right attitude which enhances performance? Schneiderman tackles a subject few other music guides handle, surveying the fine art of preparing for a performance and providing a general overview of the ideas and nature of performance; from feeling rhythms through the body to using art as an analogy for performance. -- Midwest Book Review

Recommended by Jeanne Baxtresser, Principal Flutist, New York Philharmonic "Pragmatic and poetic. A rational and eminently workable program of personal exploration and discovery to be embraced along with the nuts and bolts of musical study." Schneiderman joins and reinforces a growing number of teachers and health practitioners offering this advice: that a healthy attitude toward performance is a skill which can be learned, and which will be handsomely rewarded -- Performing Artists University of California, San Francisco; "An intriguing analysis of the nature of musical performance and of action in general." Oliver Sacks, Clinical Professor of Neurology Albert Einstein College of Medicine; Author "Artistic in content and style as well as evocative. A reader's invitation to embrace the intimacy of making music "delightfully thoughtful" -- Kyle D. Pruett, Psychiatrist Yale Child Study Center, Yale University; Author

4.0 out of 5 stars A fresh perspective on making music, May 8, 2000
By
This review is from: Confident Music Performance: The Art of Preparing (Paperback)
I would recommend this book to anyone who plays music because it offers a fresh perspective on performance. I have played the violin for over 20 years and until I read this book I still got nervous before every performance. The most valuable lesson in this book was how to take the focus off of myself and how I was playing and instead focus on bringing the music to life as a service to the composer and my audience. It may seem simple, but the author presents the information in a beautiful and convincing manner. I'm now buying a copy for my sister who is also a violinist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes your musical vision beyond technique, September 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Confident Music Performance: The Art of Preparing (Paperback)
If you're a musician stuck in the technical aspects of music making and want a broader, enriched view, this book will definitely expand your horizons. The auther reminds us that we may feel alone when performing but really we're not. You, your instrument, the composer, and the audience are all discussed to highlight what each wants and needs to get out of music making. This has permanently changed my view on any musical performance-whether I'm participating or not.
