Book Description

0395540038 978-0395540039 November 1990
"The Confident Student, International Edition", provides practical and immediately applicable skills and critical-thinking strategies by emphasizing self-discovery, self-management, and self-assessment, with an underlying theme of helping first-year students to be more confident in their approach to learning. "The Confident Student"'s core values of individual responsibility and confidence through accomplishment remain at its forefront by showing students they can succeed by applying themselves. The seventh edition pays particular attention to today's student diversity, not only in their backgrounds but also in the ways they learn. Some learn best by reading, some are more visually oriented, and some learn best through practice and assessment. The conversational writing style coupled with the variety of strategies and exercises enhances the journey students take to becoming more successful in college and life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I particularly like the Awareness Checks and use them to launch each chapter. The textbook is well organized and the layout is easy for the students to follow. It definitely is what my students need and I don't see any weaknesses."-- Dale S. Haralson, Hinds Community College

"I love the text. It is filled with a variety of exercises and experiences for the student from the way the text flows with the presentation of topics to examples, applications, confidence builders, exercises, group activities, and my personal favorite the "reflections" on the chapter."-- Karen S. Mayse, Central Christian College of Kansas --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I use this book with students. They love it! It provides helpful strategies to enhance listening skills, note taking skills, comprehension, test taking preparation and time management. Students keep this book and refer to it often.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elementary..., January 4, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is basically designed for an elementary, maybe middle school aged child. THe focus is on critical thinking, and everyday life skills such as balancing your checkbook, and managing your time wisely.

1.0 out of 5 stars The teacher is always right! The student is always wrong!, June 19, 2011

That's the main message of this textbook. According to this worthless piece of junk, if you fail in a class, it's totally your fault. There are no such things as bad professors, just bad students. No matter how well you think you tried to take notes and be an "active listener," you apparently just weren't trying hard enough! If you get a bad grade on a test, why, the professor NEVER could have supplied you with unclear, badly written questions, or even quizzed you on material you didn't cover! It's all YOUR fault! And don't you ever dare disagree with the teacher, even if they're stating something factually wrong! You're mistaken!
