Best Practices in Configuration Management to Ensure Quality

Many organizations are invoking a new kind of management technique – Configuration Management – meant to ensure a product maintains its originally intended design, materials, composition, and processing throughout its entire lifecycle. This method moves away from current supply chain thinking, in which products often undergo countless changes throughout the process. Configuration Management: Implementation, Principles, and Applications for Manufacturing Industries decreases the risk of safety breaches and timely and expensive changes, while preserving the quality of the end product. This volume provides businesses with the management objectives necessary for survival in today’s corporate structure.

Examines the Lost Tribal Wisdom of Project Management

This valuable guide emphasizes that configuration management is driven by designers, not by the often unpredictable whims of end-users. It also addresses ways to overcome missing tribal wisdom – the tendency to fall into the new-newer-newest syndrome, always looking for the next great technology, software, etc. The book contains more than 60 reader-friendly tables, figures, and checklists to help bolster understanding of these and other discussed management concepts.

The author emphasizes these foundational principles:

  • Configuration management is designed to turn perception into reality
  • If changes are made to configuration items, the safety of the product could be breached
  • Configuration item selections must be made by a team, not by one person or department

In addition to providing an unprecedented overview of this groundbreaking management style, this text presents case studies in which an understanding of configuration management principles would have saved valuable time and financial resources. It effectively provides the knowledge base industrial, project management, and Lean engineers need to learn, implement, and apply the tried-and-trusted strategies of configuration management in any company.

4.0 out of 5 stars Configuration Management, May 9, 2009
This review is from: Configuration Management: Implementation, Principles, and Applications for Manufacturing Industries (Hardcover)
Joseph Sorrentino has spent more than three decades in the Quality Systems area starting with a stint in the Navy and continuing on as a consultant to industry and military organizations. His vision is that managers would do well to apply the principles of excellent Quality Systems to just about every aspect of enterprise management.

Sorrentino states that "New management enterprise is based on understanding configuration management." He then sets about explaining his view of what configuration management actually is. While enterprise management, in the 21st century, comprises much more than configuration management (CM) alone, certainly CM is an integral part of the tool set needed. According to Sorrentino, the purpose of CM is "to ensure that a product maintains the same design, materials, composition, or processing as was originally intended, from delivery through its entire life cycle."

Sorrentino draws upon his Navy and consulting experience to weave interesting stories into this detailed text lending a more readable style to the topic and providing illuminating case studies. From the overview chapter on "Turning perception into reality" to the closing chapter on "Measuring and analysis for continuous improvement," Sorrentino alternates from detailed information on machining or quality control techniques to generalized management concepts.

The reader will have to keep her/his wits about them to follow Sorrentino's fast paced book which quickly shifts from general information and commentary down to the details of, for example, surface characteristics of metal. This book should be on the shelf of any manager, supervisor or production lead in the manufacturing industry.
