This book(Hazeltine, and Meiss's [Plasma confinement]) is good to study oneself plasma equilibrium and preliminary mathematics. Especially, Ch.2 (Fundamentals) includes the essential knowledge on coordinates, Lagrangian and Hamitonian description, etc. That part will be helpful to one who want to review fundamentals briefly.
Since authors are theoretical physicsts, this book emphasizes mathematical motivation than other books. For example, it introduces Poincare's thm on vector field or the answer on the question, "why we use toroidal vessel for confinement" in a mathematical view. Furthermore, the most valuable strong point of this book is that it denotes a lot of reference(journal papers or other texts) at the end of each chapter. It is so helpful to me.

After the Ch. 3(equilibrium part), this book, however, tends to be just a 'comprehensive and brief introduction' on famous journal paper. There are too much ommision on the calculation after Ch.3, so I feel tired to follow the complicated and heavy calculation as I did, reading the journal paper directly.

If you want to start studying equilibrium or flux surface coordinate theory, I recommend this book strongly. However, the fluid/kinetic description parts or transport parts are confused and have nothing better than the original journal papers also denoted in this text.

The book covered plasma research basic components very well. A necessary book in a plasma researcher's library. I like the book's logical layout and detail presentations.

One of the most complete, rigorous (and yet not too obscure) textbooks on plasma physics for magnetic fusion applications. I would recommend this textbook to any graduate student interested in the more theoretical aspects of magnetic confinement fusion.
