Book Description

Flame of Evil May 30, 2006
The world is at war. The Republic of the Carolinas and the Virginia Freestate have already fallen to the invading Mosul, a ravening, barbaric horde led by an evil fundamentalist priesthood. Only the Kingdom of Albany, with aid from the Norse Alliance of Britain and Scandinavia, remains free to continue the struggle.
Against the hellspawn controlled by the Mosul stands The Four, a supernatural entity comprised of four youngsters from disparate backgrounds: Argo, the back-country hick; Jesamine, the slave-concubine; Raphael the Hispanian cannon-fodder conscript; and Cordelia, the spoiled aristocrat. Together, they alone have managed to combat the Mosul's Dark Things.
The army of Albany moves south to attempt to free Virginia and The Four go along in support. The battle engages cavalry, infantry, and artillery -- but the Mosul have other weapons in their arsenal, and as The Four try desperately to protect their comrades from other-worldly foes, they catch fleeting glimpses of two albino children, the White Twins. Even the enigmatic Yancey Slide has no clue as to what kind of threat the twins may represent.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Though Farren's sequel to Kindling (2004) contains orgiastic sex scenes, sadomasochistic romps and dark magic rituals, this alternate history is more intrigued by its own big black zeppelins than any girl-on-girl whip action. Cordelia, Jesamine, Argo and Raphael are "The Four," a multicultural band of teenagers able to function as a group mind that psychically fights Dark Things in the Other Place. Their powers are necessary to save the free world from the ravening Mosul Empire and its evil enchantress. The Four grow in mystical power and in their desire for alcohol and sex. They also become aware of their proclivities: Cordelia experiments with lesbianism and whips, while Jesamine succumbs to the sexuality of one Jack Kennedy, the prime minister of the Kingdom of Albany. Kennedy uses the Four to fight the Mosul enchantress, who seeks to enslave the world or destroy it and all its alternates. Confusing and murky, the mishmash of ahistoric detail, sexual innuendo and strange magic weighs things down until the plot is as hungover as the characters. (June)

From Booklist

The Four of Farren's Kindling (2004) are plagued by visions of mysterious, pale twins. Meanwhile, freeing Virginia from Mosul rule goes well, with the Kingdom of Albany turning back the horde with surprisingly little supernatural aid. When Prime Minister Kennedy goes to London to negotiate with the English and Norse, the Four accompany him per the mysterious Yancey Slide's advice. They meet spies from the Morgana's Web network and hear rumors about the envisioned twins related to a breeding program Jeakqual-Ahrach has been working on. Then in one chaotic day and night, Kennedy is assassinated, and Four member Lady Cordelia is kidnapped and, with a detour past a pyramid being built in Amiens for some nefarious Mosul purpose, whisked to Paris. The other three Four (Argo Weaver, Jesamine, Raphael Vegas) come to her rescue, with Yancey and a group of Rangers striking at the heart of Jeakqual-Ahrach's most destructive plan yet. The struggle for freedom from a nearly unstoppable colonial force that Farren's fantastic alternate history portrays is altogether gripping. Regina Schroeder

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a kid but an Adult who love's Mick Farren's work, September 15, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Conflagration (Hardcover)
I loved Mick's Vampire quartet...simply some of the best reading I've ever done. When I saw the Kindling I wished it were aVictor Renquist novel but took a chance. It was very different from a vampire novel but excellant! The sequel is just as good and i hope mick will give us a new Renquest novel and complete this trilogy soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mick Farren, September 3, 2006
This review is from: Conflagration (Hardcover)
Buy this book and all other Mick Farren novels. You will not be disappointed. From the time I first picked up an out of print copy of "Feelies" in a used book store a dozen years ago, I have found Mick Farren to be the most creative, original, and unique writer since Jerzy Kozinski. This novel is another great read. Given the talent of this writer, I am in shock that in all these years I have never seen any main stream bookstores carry even a single copy of his work. I don't know how he got blacklisted, but I will buy every book Mick Farren writes. "Conflagration" is as fresh and entertaining as it gets. Thank you Mick.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting erotic alternate historical fantasy, June 3, 2006
This review is from: Conflagration (Hardcover)
The fearsome "Four" teens (Cordelia, Jesamine, Argo and Raphael) function as one when they must psychically battle the Dark Things in the Other Place in their quest to contain the evil Mosul Empire and its malevolent enchantress Queen Jeakqual-Ahrach. Their current assignment is to drive the Asian horde out of the once free Commonwealth of Virginia. However, the quartet realizes that their powers as a group and as individuals are growing rapidly, but none of them comprehend that a by-product of their rising skills is an increasing dependency on alcohol and sex at first.

Each soon recognizes what is happening as they covet sex to the point that it engulfs their every moment, but none apparently can stop the desire for more. Each turns to some form of gratification with Jesamine making it with Prime Minster Jack Kennedy, a bull who can keep it up. However, the heroes must return to form soon as the enemy enchantress has created twins to destroy to quartet and Jesamine has been abducted into enemy held territory across the channel near what is left of Paris. Together they are nearly invincible, but their individual needs and desires keep them divided.

CONFLAGRATION, the sequel to KINDLING, is an interesting erotic alternate historical fantasy. The story line spends quite a bit of time in the first segment showcasing the wide sexual appetites of the Four, but once an assassination and the abduction occur, the plot goes hyperspeed thriller though the passion cravings grow too. Though a bit muddled, fans who appreciate a different type of alternate historical fantasy, will want to read this tale and its predecessor as Mick Farren brings out all the chains, whips, and assorted XXX paraphernalia in this rousing tale.
