1.0 out of 5 stars The Poor Man's SOCOM
Are you kidding me? How can anybody give this thin, underdeveloped cartoon of a game 5 stars? I read all the glowing reviews here on Amazon and, being a hardcore SOCOM fan, was conviced that I'd have a great time playing Conflict: Desert Storm. Oh boy. My disappointment began as soon as the title screen appeared, followed by a truly pathetic cut-scene. It's like the...

...This game is very good.... C:DS is a third person shooter that allows the player to command a four-man squad of either U.S. Delta Force or 22nd British SAS (Special Air Service) operators in a variety (15) of direct-action missions set during the 1991 Gulf War. Missions range from rescue operations, urban combat, SCUD hunting/killing, SAM site elimination, and others. Your squad (regardless of your "home" nation) consists of a rifleman, sniper, heavy weapons specialist, and demolitions expert. as you progess through missions, your soldiers will become more adept with their weapons and equipment. They will also rise through military ranks and (if they are REALLY good) receive awards for valor. Weapons carried by your troopers is dictated by mission requirements, although men can trade weapons and equipment amongst themselves in order to suit the needs of you, the overall mission commander.
GOOD POINTS: 1.Good background graphics with varying weather and light effects. By the way, this game has the most realistic portrayal of what the world looks like through night vision I've ever seen. 2.This game allows you to play as the British SAS! ... 3.Good interaction between soldiers, and good AI on the part of your squadmates who you are not in control of. They shoot at the enemy, and use what weapons you tell them to ...In other words, they move, shoot and duck WHEN you tell them to. 4.The "ability" to have one (or all) of your men act as medics when another squadmate goes down. However, if all are taken out at once, then that would be all she wrote... 5.Enemy AI is very good (maybe too good!). They react to your actions and provide serious resistance to you. Also, the Iraqi (Soviet-supplied) weapons and vehicles look and perform like the real thing. AK-47s, AK-74s, PKM machine guns, Dragunov sniper rifles, T-72 & T-62 tanks, and BMP-1 infantry carriers are all finely detailed, and look great. 6.The game provides a "what if" scenario (Operation Desert Saber) that the ground war didn't end so quickly, and combat was taken into the very heart of Baghdad. COOL! 7.The ability to allow you to command your men in textbook infantry combat techniques. Ambushes, supporting by fire, suppressing fires, and (I hate to say it) retreating, can all be done just like in real life infantry exercises. 8.Two-player cooperative missions using a split-screen format. Interesting, but slightly tricky to get used to. Anyway, now your girlfriend can play with you, instead of being bored by watching you. 9. The ability to take personal control of every man in your squad, and being able to decide "who goes with who and where". If you want to be your sniper (gotta love that Barrett .50 cal!) and scout ahead while everyone else hangs back, you can. If you want your heavy weapons expert and rifleman to work together to take out tanks, while the demo specialist and sniper provide cover, you can do that too. I could go on, but I'm sure that you get the idea...
BAD POINTS: ...1.Sound effects are pretty cheap. Some are good, but most are not. Especially the sounds of your team's voices, voices of the enemy, various vehicle sounds, and the sound of reloading your weapon. 2.Accuracy with weapons can be frustrating. Getting single shot kills (head shots) is very hard, and when you miss, the Iraqis waste no time in throwing some major heat your way. 3.Spoken dialogue is very corny, especially when you call for air or artillery strikes. 4.Control is very tricky to master. But, once you get it, you've got it. 5. Missions in campaign mode are the same regardless is you choose SAS or Delta soldiers. I think that the game's depth and replayability could have been greatly enhanced by a different mission progression for each of the two units. 6. this game has the worst rendering of a UH-60 Blackhawk (I guess what it is supposed to be) helo that I have EVER seen!
There are a few other good and bad points, but those are the biggest ones. ..So, before you write this one off, give it a try. You may be (much like myself) pleasantly surprised. Dare to try this one. ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Conflict: Desert Storm is #1, April 9, 2003

This game is just as good as all the Medal of Honor games. Non stop action makes you feel like you are on the battle flelds of the deserts of kuwait and Iraq and the city of Baghdad. I like the fact that you can command a squad of 3 other soldiers all at the same time or 1 or 2 soldiers. This is a true game you can team fight to kill the enemy from the front, back or from the left and right sides. You can call in air strikes, use C-4 charges, tank mines, anti-tank rocket launcher just to name a few. You can also drive jeeps and tanks. All the soldiers under your command can get promotions and go up in rank if they perform exceptionally well in each mission. I can't wait until Gotham Games comes out with another war game. This game is great and is a must for everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars great action, October 19, 2002

This review is from: Conflict: Desert Storm (Video Game)
This is an excellent game with intense gun battles. With a wide variety of weapons, you get to control four squad members and battle against relatively intelligent ai. You can individually control any of the squad members. Easy and good control of squad member allows you to make sound tactical decisions. The controls in the third person are a bit tricky and take a little getting used. The graphics are good. The game is a bit short, only ten to twelve hours of play providing you dont die to many times.

I've read and seen a lot about this game and it looks really cool. I especially like the co-operative play, something that SOCUM left out. The game looks like it will be really fun and will kick [rear]!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy For All Gamers, April 25, 2003
This review is from: Conflict: Desert Storm (Video Game)
This game is amazing its a third person shooter that puts you right on the front lines of the Gulf War. The single player mode is great. Each level is unique and challenging. From taking down tanks to calling in air strikes on bridges the game has it all. The levels also include driving a tank and a jeep. The jeep has a driver, a machine gun in the passenger seat, a mounted rocket launcher in the back and room for one more passenger. The tank has the same. But what really puts this game on top is the great co op game play with a friend. you each take command over another solider and dive straight into the levels together as a squad. I own SOCOM and Ghost Recon also and i think that this game is just as good as them. Its graphics are ok the enemys could be alittle less blury and the sound is average but these are just minor set backs in one great pakage. and if you get alittle bored with just killing iraqis take out your knife and slice a few goats down to size. all in all this is a great game is a must for all gamers especially the fans of SOCOM and Ghost Recon.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid game, but could be better, October 15, 2002

Conflict: Desert Storm is a good game. Not great, but not bad. As a previous reviewer said it does have some issues, framerate and character movements aren't as smooth and realistic as they could be, and yes I DID notice that the enemies seemed to be able to see you from so far away, sometimes even at night when you were ducked down doing some recon. Also, because the game takes place in the middle east, the environments aren't that veried, but of course that's not an actual fault of the game since it does stay with the subject of the game(the middle east conflict).

Even though this game isn't all around as good as SOCOM it DOES have a 2 player coop mode, and to me that makes up for what problems it has. There's nothing better than saving the free world with your buddy right beside you. I say its a worthwile game, and actually I'd give it 3 and a half stars probably, but this review doesn't allow that. Certainly rent it and even buy a used copy, although I wouldn't pay full price for it I don't think.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game, but could use a little work., October 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Conflict: Desert Storm (Video Game)
I very much enjoyed this game. The play is exceptional and the wide variety of weapons is great. The "light fifty" is the best. I would have given the game five stars, but the AI's ability to see you no matter where you go is a bit frustrating. I don't see any possible way that a mission can be completed in complete stealth. The Iraqi soldiers could be five miles away and they are able to determine who you are.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gulf War revisited, November 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Conflict: Desert Storm (Video Game)
I have seen this game, did the research: read the reviews and such and decided to play it.
I am glad I did.

With opinions aside about the rights & wrongs of wars and conflicts...
We have to remember that this is a review about THE game, NOT about morals.
Being a former veteran of the Gulf War, it was a pleasent sight to see another different type of War protayed in a game.
We had played (as respect and memory to those who actually served) in WWII, Vietnam, and now we serve in The Gulf War.
For many, this will be as close to serving as some will get!

Now for the Review:
I have a PS2 with a Bose 5.1 Digital audio system.

The game over all is a pleasure to play and was a sound investment that was made.

Game control was easy to grasp, though it was unusal to be using the top 2 "joy sticks" on the PS2 pad.
But, once you got the hang of it, it was easy as pie!

Sound EFXs were excellent (in my opionion) and were generally right on!! Though a bit of "tweaking" could have helped.
But, it was not a deterent to the game in any way.
My Bose systems rocked with the sounds of combat!!

The graphics were great and its true, a slight improvment could have helped, but, YOU know what your seeing, and YOU were not seeing pixalated visions. The programers did well.

The locations used in the game were remarkable and lifelike, it actually took me back to when I was there on the frontline in 1990-91.
Trust me, the programers did there research for this game.
The attention to detail was so great, that they protrayed the Saudi/Iraqi restrooms correctly!!

Miliatry weaponary was on the money and were excellent.
They passed my standards.

The Missions were all sound and solid, and you needed to have "Team work" to get through the missions.
You can not be a "Rambo" and go at it alone!! No such thing!!
This is why our Military uses the word "TEAM"....
as in Special Ops TEAM, SEAL TEAM, and you play just that, as a TEAM.
YOu move and work as a TEAM.

I will not rehash what the others here have said (Positive) about this game.
I will give it the rating I gave it, for it is a great game.
I and MY son , extreemly enjoyed playing this game.
My son learned "basic" survival techniques and movements, which in reality are needed these days.
He wasn't taught to Kill, for that is wrong, I taught him the difference, he knows what is Role playing/fantasy vs reality.

Maybe the next go round, the programers will improve it, for those who have become "spoiled" and who "failed" to look beyond the "glitz" of games that they played before. (Like SOCOM)
Granted glitz and look are what we seek, and is "COOL".
But in true combat, my friends, there is no Glitz, only honor and TEAM work.
Remember, in combat you do get killed, you don't have that "2nd" chance of coming back to life with no wounds.
This game represents what war amd conflict is all about and what YOU need to do to survive it.
TEAM work and thought!

So grab your gear and play HARD!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Army of Four, October 16, 2003

Some play is a little choppy, and that's the only thing wrong with this game in my opion. The 5 star rating is for fun and realism (not that I fought in battle). If you play this game to it's full potential using all it's features and strategy... it really makes you FEEL like you're part of a real squad and you personally get hooked with each individual character and his special trait. To lose a character and have him replaced by a rookie has mixed emotions: 1)you have this green new guy who's gonna just walk in and replace your fallen comrad. 2)you feel sorry for the new guy and have to protect him, yet give him some real experience. Thing is... watch each others back and complete a mission without losing anyone. When I play this game it makes me feel part of a real team and have LOTS MORE RESPECT for the REAL boys out there fighting so that I can sit safe and comfortably playing this game.

This review is from: Conflict: Desert Storm (Video Game)
before i bought this game i had rented socom and thought that game was awsome. now that i have Conflict: Desert Storm i can tell that i was wrong. this game, i think is much better than socom. you can switch throughout your special forces squad quickly and easily, giving you different angles and vantage points on your enemy as well as allowing you to act as your other squad members. if one of your team members is shot and unconcious you can still heal them with medipacks. you can also give your teamates numerous commands.the weapons and equiptment are great, ranging anywhere from normal pistols to laser designaters. multiplayer and single player missions are very exciting. the graphics in the game are fair as well as the controls. i had hoped there would be more missions and the game is also lacking the online feature which would have givin it a fifth star. overall, i believe this game deserves four stars.
