From Publishers Weekly

Rosenberg (Buried Evidence) rolls out a new character but not much more in this crime drama about the manipulation of a developmentally disabled young man accused of robbery. The latest in the New York Times bestselling author's string of female crime stoppers is Joanne Kuhlman, a prosecutor in Southern California trying the case of three childhood buddies who held up a 24-hour market. One of the men, Ian Decker, has a learning disability that makes it questionable whether he even knew that his friends, the rough-and-tumble Rubinsky brothers, were committing a crime. Decker's attorney finally convinces Kuhlman that justice would be better served by having the young man testify against the Rubinskys. By that time, however, Decker has not only disappeared but an anonymous caller to his mother says her son has been killed and buried in the mountains outside Los Angeles. As Kuhlman struggles with the case, she's also dogged by personal problems: her 15-year-old daughter gets pregnant, her son is feeling abandoned, her former husband is in jail on charges of child stealing and embezzlement and she longs for the steadying touch of a good man. Unlike some of her better work, like Interest of Justice, Rosenberg's latest never catches fire. Kuhlman is not a particularly memorable protagonist, and many of the other characters are prone to unrealistic behavior and clunky dialogue. Rosenberg's portrayal of Decker as a young man without the intellectual armor to make it in the world is touching at points, but it can't carry an otherwise lackluster plot. Agent, Peter Miller. National print and TV advertising. (Feb. 6)Forecast: Rosenberg might sell even more books if she settled on a single, better-developed protagonist, but six million books in print already is nothing to sniff at, and her fans can be counted on to snap up her latest.

From Library Journal

Assistant district attorney Joanne Kuhlman doesn't need to be embroiled in a homicide case-her life is complicated enough. Her two troubled teenagers, Leah and Mike, have been recently returned to her after her former husband, their father, is arrested for child stealing and embezzlement. While Joan struggles with her angry, rebellious children, she learns that a seemingly simple case of robbery may involve the murder of Ian Decker, a developmentally disabled young man. The na‹ve Ian is suspected of holding up a convenience store with the Rubinski brothers, childhood friends turned thugs. When Ian disappears, Joanne worries that he has been killed because he knows too much. Rosenberg, author of six best-selling legal thrillers, including Buried Evidence, writes with fast-paced energy but little depth. Her plot relies too much on coincidence, especially the feel-good conclusion. As a protagonist, Joanne seems weak and distracted, not positive qualities for a successful prosecutor or crime fighter. Laural Merlington reads competently, with a pleasant, clear voice and intonation. The tape quality is excellent; recommended for Rosenberg's loyal fans and popular fiction collections.

More About the Author

Nancy Taylor Rosenberg is an American writer. She attended school at Gulf Park College in Gulf Port, Mississippi. She has three children, three step children, one adopted child, and currently resides in Dallas, Texas.

Rosenberg's first novel, MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES, was published in 1993, and the film rights were obtained by Academy Award winning director, Jonathan Demme. Rosenberg novels have been translated into almost every language. The majority of her novels have been New York Times bestsellers. MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES has been described as a contemporary CRIME AND PUNISHMENT.

Rosenberg is also known for her philanthropic efforts. She received national acclaim for her writing program for inner city youth,"Voice of Tomorrow". The Board of Supervisors of Orange County voted her "A Woman of Excellence, Learning for Life" in 1994. She was featured on Prime Time Live and in People Magazine for her adoption of a child with a rare, frequently terminal illness, Methylmalonic Acidemia, or MMA. A physician in France who saw the Prime Time Live episode claimed he was curing MMA patients by means of a liver transplant. At the time, the child Rosenberg adopted, Janelle Garcia, was the oldest living survivor with MMA. No one had previously lived past the age of eighteen. Janelle received both a kidney and liver transplant and is now in her early thirties, giving hope to future generations of children suffering from MMA.

Rosenberg's family and friends have nicknamed her "Lucy" as she is known for doing unusual and sometimes hilarious things. She says she never knows what to expect when she opens her refrigerator. She once found flea solution for a fifty pound dog in her freezer. She does have dogs but none of them weigh over fourteen pounds. On one occasion her husband asked her a question while she was writing and she told him she would answer him in when she finished her sentence. When she finally answered him, he told her an entire day had passed sine he had asked her the question.

5.0 out of 5 stars A READING THAT DOESN'T MISS A CUE OR A CLUE, February 15, 2002
Legal thrillers often top bestseller lists due in large part to the can't-put-down yarns spun by popular author Nancy Taylor Rosenberg. Here's a can't-stop-listening-to reading of Rosenberg's seventh page-turner by gifted voice artist Laural Merlington. She doesn't miss a cue or a clue in her rendering of this suspense filled law and order tale.

Joanne Kulman has enough problems - she's about to divorce her jailed husband and her two teenage offspring are, well, teenagers. Her job as a prosecutor in California's Ventura County has always presented challenges, but this is the biggest of them all. When a convenience store is robbed some young lawbreakers are soon arrested. They're identified by witnesses, and will stand trial.

However, Ian, one of the young men is developmentally disturbed, and it soon becomes clear to Joanne that the other boys tricked him into being a part of the robbery. Then, quite suddenly, Ian disappears. Something else is going on besides a plain vanilla heist.

She is obligated to try the case, and she is attracted to Ian's good looking lawyer. Conflicts abound in "Conflict Of Interest."

5.0 out of 5 stars delightful legal thriller, January 26, 2002
Joanne Kuhlman, an assistant district attorney in Ventura County, California, is not having an easy time of it personally or professionally. Two years ago her husband became so involved in gambling that he stood to lose everything they jointly owned. He ran, taking their two children with him and giving them all different IDs so they couldn't easily be traced. It took a private detective two years to find them and return the children to Joanne

While the threesome struggle to bring a bit of normalcy into their lives following the trauma, Joanne is assigned a robbery case that led to the arrest of three defendants. Since none of them have a violent background they are released on bail. One of the defendants Ian Decker is mentally disabled and a loose cannon. After he vanishes, everyone including Joanne thinks that the co-defendants, brothers who also dropped out of site, killed him. A shattered Joanna takes step beyond that required by law to see that Ian receives justice.

Nancy Taylor Rosenberg does an astonishingly keen, but believable job of misdirecting the audience on several different levels. CONFLICT OF INTEREST features a protagonist who is strong enough to hold herself together during the worst of times yet remain honest and true to her values when seeking justice in her personal and professional endeavors. This latest Rosenberg work deserves best selling status, as legal thriller fans will relish every delightful reading moment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tough story....well told, January 20, 2002
By
Terry Mathews (a small town in east Texas) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

In the Acknowledgements section of this book, the author states: "I would like to express my gratitude to the many people, angels, family members, doctors and heaven-sent muses for providing me with the strength and inspiration to tell this particular story...The underlying issue in this novel -- the plight of the mentally disabled within the criminal justice system -- seemed to be of such great significance that the majority of this book was written in tremendous pain. I am almost now completely recovered, and eager to begin my next project."

CONFLICT OF INTEREST is, at its core, the story of Ian Decker a mentally challenged man who becomes involved in the California judicial system, with disastrous results.

Nancy Taylor Rosenberg knows her way around a courtroom and her main character, Assistant District Attorney Joanne Kulhman, is one tough cookie. Joanne has survived losing her children for two years after her ex-husband kidnapped them and went on the lam. Now reunited with the children, Leah and Mike, Joanne is trying to put the pieces of her life back together.

She is assigned the case against Ian and his two running buddies, but she sees something in the young man's eyes that connects with her softer side and she winds up walking a very fine line between her job as an ADA and her desire to get to the bottom of Ian's disappearance.

There are several sub-plots and a very interesting "private investigator" named Eli, but this book is ultimately the story of a young man's travails and triumphs despite his shortcomings.

Enjoy!
