5.0 out of 5 stars Conflicting Loyalties Rocks, September 27, 2004
This review is from: Conflicting Loyalties (Paperback)
I just turned the last page and congratulate Mr. Caicedo for such an engaging, insightful, illuminating and perceptive novel regarding the unique challenges to the Cuban patriot living in Miami, only 200 miles from Havana. Bravo!!! The situation and scenario is so believable that I have half a feeling Caicedo has averted an invasion of Cuba by writing this book! Quite a page turner, use caution though; you may end up with a yearning for authentic Cafecito Cubano!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Suspenseful Ride, July 24, 2004
This review is from: Conflicting Loyalties (Paperback)
With an ear for language and a profound understanding of Latin American politics and history, Caicedo brings the reader to the warm, colorful, and politically dynamic region of South Florida, where the mysterious sinking of a coast guard cutter sparks a national crisis that brings difficult questions into the public consciousness--should wars be waged on account of their fruits, should immigrants be beholden to the interests of their mother country, should a journalist report a fact that will harm her family? With honesty, humor, and the capacity to transport the reader into an 8th Street coffee shop, Caicedo has produced a thriller whose pages cannot remain unturned.

I have to confess that I couldn't put Conflicting Loyalties down, despite the fact I had pressing work to do. The pace is compelling, and the characters realistic.

In addition to being fast-moving and absorbing, the book is a convincing portrait of a community in conflict, as well as an intriguing reflection of how journalism works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Journalism Plot, July 11, 2004
This review is from: Conflicting Loyalties (Paperback)
I started Conflicting Loyalties and could not put it down; it has an exciting journalism plot. The writing flowed smoothly because Caicedo included history of the area. The details of South Florida, Cuba, the newspaper, Miami Spanish language radio, all fit the story perfectly. The South Florida setting was used to build believable characters. The book is a "really good read."

Kudos for Harry Caisedo, author of the action pacted novel, CONFLICTING LOYALTIES. Utiliizing his long experience as a Latin American journalist he writes a polltical mystery that is almost real and current. Harry skillfully immerses his readers into the story as if they were residents of Miami's Little Havana witnessing the everyday esperiences of being Cuban --family loyalties, rabid politicians, protestors, conspirators against their nemesis, El Barbudo Fidel Castro, and the daily ritual of gulping down a cefecito Cubano at a sidewalk cafe.
