Confocal and Two-Photon Microscopy
Foundations, Applications, and Advances
Edited by Alberto Diaspro

Confocal and two-photon fluorescence microscopy has provided researchers with unique possibilities of three-dimensional imaging of biological cells and tissues and of other structures such as semiconductor integrated circuits. Confocal and Two-Photon Microscopy: Foundations, Applications, and Advances provides clear, comprehensive coverage of basic foundations, modern applications, and groundbreaking new research developments made in this important area of microscopy.

Opening with a foreword by G. J. Brakenhoff, this reference gathers the work of an international group of renowned experts in chapters that are logically divided into balanced sections covering theory, techniques, applications, and advances, featuring:
* In-depth discussion of applications for biology, medicine, physics, engineering, and chemistry, including industrial applications
* Guidance on new and emerging imaging technology, developmental trends, and fluorescent molecules
* Uniform organization and review-style presentation of chapters, with an introduction, historical overview, methodology, practical tips, applications, future directions, chapter summary, and bibliographical references
* Companion FTP site with full-color photographs
* The significant experience of pioneers, leaders, and emerging scientists in the field of confocal and two-photon excitation microscopy

Confocal and Two-Photon Microscopy: Foundations, Applications, and Advances is invaluable to researchers in the biological sciences, tissue and cellular engineering, biophysics, bioengineering, physics of matter, and medicine, who use these techniques or are involved in developing new commercial instruments.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an excellent book that is a 'must-have' for any laboratory that is interested in novel forms of microscopy." (Biomolecular Engineering, November 2004)

"…well presented with handsome images and figures…a useful source of reference…" (Annals of Biomedical Engineering, July 2002)

From the Author

This book clearly illustrates the power of confocal and two-photon microscopy in three-dimensional imaging at the microscopy level. It focuses, within a critical framework, on the most relevant aspects of modern optical microscopy, and it is important because it covers immediately useful aspects. It gives theory as well as practical information to induce potential new users in the field, as it also makes clear, for people not involved in microscopy, of the benefits in using three-dimensional optical microscopy and consequently in coupling it to other physical, biophysical, biological, chemical and medical methods. This is the book I needed when I was a doctoral thesis student and during my first approaches as novice a researcher. This is the book I needed when I started the two-photon adventure. Now as in the past I have to thank all the authors here for their eminent experience in the different aspects of this discipline.

This review is from: Confocal and Two-Photon Microscopy: Foundations, Applications and Advances (Hardcover)
Reviewing Confocal and Two-Photon Microscopy: Foundations, Applications, and Advances, a difficult question to answer could be: is this text a "book" or a "manual"? The best answer is probably "both". The advantages of both approaches to the subject are present in the text: it provides a clear, neat overview of the theoretical principles and basic foundations of modern laser-scanning microscopy and a large variety of advanced applications including detailed technical descriptions and practical hints.
This book takes the reader through very complex phenomena and the basic concepts of confocal and two-photon microscopy, fluorescence imaging, digital image processing and image-restoration methods are clearly explained. In addition, application chapters interestingly cover not only the great advantages of the quantitative laser-scanning microscopy in biology but also the practical complexity and the limitations of the technique.
In the end, a remarkable text of "theory and practice" of the most relevant present light microscopy techniques.
