Book Description

July 25, 2008
This ground-breaking book looks at the use of ceramic art as a confrontational tool, where artist's work comments on social issues. It is essentially a massive overview of the ceramic scene from this perspective, showcasing typical pieces of work by ceramic artists alongside their statements explaining their approach. Essentially an art book, this is very much about how work is used to confront people with the truth and comment on social issues, and is divided up into relevant chapters: War and Politics, the Environment, Social and Human Condition, Gender Issues and Popular Culture. Artists include very well known established makers such as Grayson Perry, Robert Arneson, Richard Notkin, Howard Kottler etc. as well as introducing lesser known artists. This glamorous and cutting-edge book displays the work of 228 contemporary artists from 30 different countries, including the UK, USA, Greece, Hungary, France, Israel, Canada, Norway, Italy, The Netherlands, Japan, China, Palestine and Estonia amongst others, making it truly international.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Popular Book in my Classroom, July 23, 2009
Students in my drawing, painting, and ceramics classes voted Confrontational Ceramics their favorite book. It's an essential books to have in the classroom. My students love to discuss the provocative and strangely beautiful photographs. It's amazing how this book expands their notions about art in general and ceramics in particular. I love the easy to understand text and get lots of great ideas for projects. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening, November 1, 2008

We always knew writing, painting, drawing, and photography were powerful agents of social comment---but ceramics? Well, yes ... and the use of ceramic art as a means of provocative social and political comment goes back a lot farther than most people might think. Judith Schwartz has assembled an astonishing array of challenging, moving, and forceful pieces of ceramic art, intelligently arranged and superbly photographed. Paging through this book will change the way you look at ceramics specifically and art in general. A powerful and eye-opening collection, worth the attention of anyone who claims to care about art.
