Book Description

November 1, 1997 0842025995 978-0842025997
So serious are the topics of rape and sexual assault that the mere discussion of them is often avoided. In this book, Mary Odem and Jody Clay-Warner examine the complex and painful issue of sexual violence from various perspectives, including sociology, criminology, anthropology, public health, and women's studies. The inclusion of personal accounts from women who have been raped or threatened by rape makes this collection particularly accessible, compelling, and powerful. An essay details one woman's long struggle as a rape survivor, a poem describes the fear of rape and society's treatment of the victim, and a sonnet traces the journey from victim to survivor. Not only does this invaluable collection define and examine the prevalence of rape and sexual assault, but it analyzes social and institutional factors that contribute to their occurrence and provides strategies for prevention and change.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Finally, a truly superb volume on the topic of sexual assault. I highly recommend it. There are valuable pieces for everyone here—students, scholars, and those wanting to learn more about the subject of rape and sexual aggression, its impract on victims, and strategies for change. (Kurz, Demie )

This anthology serves up the leading experts and most engaging voices. Confronting Rape and Sexual Assault will be a useful primer for students, health care workers, law enforcement officials, and public policymakers. I anticipate that it will quickly become the standard reference work on the subject because of its thorough coverage. (Ginny Daley )

An excellent text that should be required reading for anyone interested in the issue. Sexual violence is placed in an institutional and cultural context, and the intersections of sexual assault and race, ethnicity, and gender are explored. (Jennifer Dritt )

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource... makes you think., April 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Confronting Rape and Sexual Assault (The Worlds of Women Series) (Paperback)
This book is a compelation of some of the popular and well known studies. Being a rape survivor, i found this book to be very informing, and it really helped me to start processing what had happened. It is divided into sections, the first one being reflections and writings of rape survivors. This is followed by other sections about why rape occurs and what can be done about it. I highly recommend this book, not as an easy, enjoyable read, but as an excellent resource and guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect collection of scholarly essays, March 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Confronting Rape and Sexual Assault (The Worlds of Women Series) (Paperback)
This book is one of the best editted practical collections on rape and sexual assault that I have read. The book is ideal for activists, administrators, survivors, scholars, and anyone else who is interested in rape and sexual assault. I used many of the essays from the book for two completely different research papers. The book contains many great articles on the prevalence of rape on college campuses. It also contains some enlighting essays on rape law and the prevalence of rape myths.
