Elegance and Violence from Sicily, Italy,
By A Customer
This review is from: Confusa e Felice (Audio CD)
This album should be heard by all people who understand both italian and pop music. Italian is required because Carmen is a highly lyric and powerful writer. Her songs are NOT poems, though: they are plain everyday language monologues (she is usually talking to someone) that capture the 'beauty of things'. The beauty of things, Carmen tells us in one of the tracks, likes to hide itself. Carmen's songs are often a successful attempt at unveiling, rediscovering such beauty. Lovers of Pop music will find in Carmen an exceptionally gifted guitarist who manages to transduce a bunch of influences (Tracy Chapman, PJ Harvey, grunge etc.) into a strongly personal style. She is the only artist on the current Italian music scene to have been able to achieve so much. Her music manages to be upsetting (almost violent at times) and elegant at the same time. Carmen is at best enjoyed live. 'Confusa e Felice' is the closest you can get to hear her live. The album was recorded at an amazing speed, during just two weeks. So: listen to the record, and then watch out for the times when Carmen will start performing around the world. That day is not far anymore.

I am Italian, so you might think I'm partial, no way! I listen to very little Italian music, I don't like Italian music, but this is one of the few exceptions. Carmen is a mix between Sinead O'Connor and Skunk Anansie, and is definitely worth buying even for people who don't speak Italian and therefore cannot understand the beautiful lyrics she writes. Her melodic skill is well above the average, and this is really a beautiful album. The music is pure rock, but her peculiar voice and her good composition skills make it very different from the average.Try it, you will not be disappointed!

It's a shame i had to spend 5 months in Italy to discover Carmen Consoli, but I'm so glad I did. I speak and understand some italian and her songs make me want to understand every word she's saying. After hearing her i bought all of her available albums and am a fan for life. She's a gem! Her music combined with her lyrics and that beautiful voice will have anyone who hears her wanting to learn italian. You gotta check her out!

it feels good to say that laura pausini and giorgia and irene grandi are doing good things in terms of the new generation of italian pop by WOMEN...but let's face it: a cursory listening of one or two carmen consoli CDs quickly leads one to the conclusion that she is the ONLY contemporary female italian vocalist who is truly INVESTED in her ART....there is no comparison....she is the leading female italian pop singer (describing her as the Italian PJ Harvey sells Carmen short)...IF NOT ...she is The Best...I want to give Nek and Mango and Tiziano a chance...but....I don't know..Carmen's music is a lot more varied ...it's more interesting than those guys'....she may very well be the best period! Bar none!

I don't speak italian, but Carmen Consoli has become one of my favorite singers ever. Her band is great, too. Her voice is full of sensuality, and her music is so full of emotion...amazing.

She is a real Songwriter, Artist and Musician, not some self proclaimed throaty diva who's voice comes from a voice box and can barely handle a guitar, their entertainment at best is only skin deep if you know what I mean (Shakira excluded). To be frank having worked with many celeb's, Carmen Consoli is one to watch. She has been performing since the age of nine and not only is an acclaimed songwriter/musician but an influential spark in the rock/blues/punk genre. Her sound is moving and electrifying, you really should experience her music.
Noted trac's on this CD are 2, 4, 5, 7 and 10. I also recommend; 'Un Sorso in Più', 'Stato di Necessità', and the song 'Orfeo' (`return me to life') a live performance at the Greek Taormina is deeply touching and hauntingly beautiful, my favorite.

Speaking italian, I'm blown away by Consoli's lyrics and deep passion. Her profound intensity will come through no matter what languages you speak.
