Book Description

Julian, a director of Wingfield and the beautiful anthropologist Jane’s lover, learns that Caleb, boss of Zidlen, has made a bid for his company. Lord Cudworth, Chair of Wingfield, organises his defences against the bid.
To fight Caleb off, Julian tries to enlist the help of Raouf, director of mega rich Mutez International, based in Vatan. Raouf needs a girl-friend and Julian persuades Jane to go to Vatan with him for three months, hoping to gain influence.

Jane writes to Tess, engineering professor, about a strange ancient mechanical device found in northern Vatan. Could it be an antikythera—a Bronze Age computer? Tess goes to Vatan to see, staying with her friend Adnan.

In England the government is in trouble, threatened by the Bulgarian baby crisis, the onion men affair, and above all the approaching bankruptcy of Leveller Armoured Cars. Covertly, Eric Quintus, Defence Secretary, manipulates events in the hope of replacing the Prime Minister.
Raouf’s wealthy aristocratic uncle Danil meets Jane at Raouf’s Vatan house. Mistaking her for a professional concubine on contract, he offers Raouf money for a transfer to him. Unwilling to reveal the truth, Raouf refuses but fobs Danil off with the promise that when he parts with Jane his uncle shall have first refusal. Nada, Raouf’s wife, threatens divorce if Jane remains in their house, so Raouf persuades Adnan, his widowed tycoon father, to house her in his nearby palace, Gorkemil.

Danil, thinking Jane is now Adnan’s mistress, believes that the promise to him has been broken and a feud begins when he hires hit men, who shoot Raouf. The Vatan family feud and the bid for Wingfield get tangled together when Danil acts to strengthen Zidlen’s position. Cudworth flies to Vatan, hoping to use secrets about Adnan’s early days to ‘encourage’ him to support Wingfield.

And how does the fascinatingly Byzantine plot of this long novel work out? Tess takes a hand and resolves the feud in the most unlikely way. With Jane, she works out a defence strategy for Wingfield that see Cudworth both lose and win, while Caleb is ennobled. Eric Quintus is banished to Key West, but when the Vatan kidnappers come they take the wrong blonde, Tess instead of Jane. The kidnappers receive an English lesson, and Tess learns something new and important. Jane earns not only a doctorate but also the status of an iconic sex goddess in Vatan.

In the end both Love and Death intervene, dance their never-ending pas de deux, and bring all to a believable and satisfying conclusion.
