Editorial Reviews

Complete Jerry Goldsmith score for Frank Marshall film from Micheal Chrichton thriller. Original album produced by Goldsmith only featured about 23 minutes of score plus ten minutes of admittedly dynamic African choral material. But that left out virtually half of magnificent score. Goldsmith's approach to thriller offers some of his most riveting action music of the nineties. Intrada presentation includes everything composer recorded, including two versions of rich "Deep Jungle", in which version recorded specifically for album deleted tense snake sequence. Standing out in new tracks are thrilling action cues: powerful Rambo style "Meet Monroe Kelly" airport escape cue, intense "Help Me" where Tim Curry meets his violent end. Other new cues include two versions of mysterious "The Ghost Tribe", "Meet Amy" sequence with alternating thrills, tenderness. Alternates plus "Villagers Chant" written by James Newton Howard & Lebo M complete 62-minute program. Entire score mastered from original digital two-track session masters, vaulted at Paramount, stunningly recorded, mixed by Bruce Botnick. The Album 1. Spirit Of Africa/The Expedition* 2:42 2. I'm not sure why this album is linked with an entirely different one, but I can assure you this review is for the 2013 release of "Congo" by Jerry Goldsmith. The original album, released in 1995, is one of my favorites by the composer. The themes and motifs are great, and the sound quality is excellent.

I've been waiting for the complete score for over a decade and am happy to finally have some of my favorite cues (Meet Monroe Kelly, The Eye, Help Me), which were left off of the first release. This album, as a whole, is very well put together and makes for an excellent, cohesive, listening experience. Bravo, Intrada Records, and thank you, Jerry Goldsmith.

"Congo" is an excellent Jerry Goldsmith score and is well worth the listen if you haven't heard it. Unfortunately, the film has a very bad reputation and is not well liked in most circles, so that may turn people off from purchasing this album. Even if you don't like the move though, Mr. Goldsmith did an excellent job with this score, and Intrada has released an excellent product in this CD.

The CD is a single disc and includes all of the cues used in the film, including a number of alternate and unused cues. All of the music on this album is excellent (but it's Jerry Goldsmith, so what do you expect) and I love that Intrada has released the complete score. "Spirit of Africa" is extremely catchy and I had it in my head years after seeing the film. Plus, this is not an album where every cue sounds the same. It goes from playful with "Meet Amy" to intense action cues like "Amy's Nightmare". The album as a whole makes you feel as if you are on a wild journey and certainly does it's job, even if the film itself couldn't live up. Intrada even put the villager's chant from the film on this release, so you will not find a more complete version of this score.

Overall, I feel this soundtrack is well worth the money and highly recommend it for Jerry Goldsmith fans or fans of film music in general. Great music with high quality audio and plenty of liner notes. Don't be turned off by the film's reputation. The music is excellent.

While the movie is a bit of a turkey, Goldsmith wrote a robust and exciting score but a truncated initial release was all that we were given. Thank God for Intrada. This is a fantastic presentation of a great score that any filmscore fan and particularly Goldsmith fans have been waiting for. The sound is amazing and the music is even better.
