From Dagwood to Dilbert, the past fifty years haven't seen much evolution in our attitudes toward work. Too many of us still believe that our work selves and our real selves, our professional and personal lives, are separate entities. This book is about how that concept is slowly, but surely, changing. It is about why it is changing. And, most important, it is about why it must change. C. Michael Thompson takes a compelling look at the connection between our inner lives and our work lives and shows how the development of the individual spirit can trigger not just personal fulfillment, but much-needed organizational change.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Congruent Life is by far the clearest and most comprehensive examination of the intellectual, emotional, psychological, and spiritual imperatives that provide the fertile soil in which a rich inner life and a successful business career can grow together." --James A. Autry, author of Real Power: Business Lessons from the TaoTe Ching

"This is a masterful book, at once challenging and encouraging, authoritative and innovative. Thompson's ideas are profound and his research is impeccable, engaging and rich with practical applications." --Gerald G. May, author of Will and Spirit and The Awakened Heart

"Spirituality and work is a popular topic these days, but few who talk or write about it do so with the grounding and insight that Michael Thompson has to offer. Thompson provides a guide to the subject that is sound in its scholarship, compelling in its presentation, and immediately applicable to contemporary lives." --Parker J. Palmer, author of Let Your Life Speak and The Courage to Teach

"Among all the books that have been appearing on this subject, Michael Thompson's voice is one of the calmest, wisest, and most helpful I know. He has something significant to say on every aspect of the subject." --Peter B. Vaill, author, Spirited Leading and Learning: Process Wisdom for a New Age

From the Inside Flap

Amidst the chaos and complexity of our daily lives, most all of us feel the need for a deeper sense of meaning. And more and more of us are searching for that meaning in the offices where we spend the majority of our waking hours. In The Congruent Life, consultant and counselor C. Michael Thompson weaves together the disparate strands of spirituality, depth psychology, and adult development theory to explore what this search consists of, what we may encounter along the way, and what the implications will be for our lives and our organizations.Thompson reunites two subjects that have long been separated--what we do for personal fulfillment and what we do for a living. He traces the history of this separation and examines how a change in our attitudes toward work and a shift in our definition of spirituality can lead us back to a more congruent life. Spirituality, as Thompson defines it, is not adherence to any particular creed or dogma, but a life orientation that creates meaning and purpose in all aspects of our lives, including our work lives. Good leadership is the fruit of that life orientation, rather than a set of skills and competencies. Thompson shows that leadership is a process of growth and maturation fed by the leader's inner spirit and he explains how such inspired leadership is essential in meeting the challenges the future holds for businesses, non-profits, and organizations of all types.Thompson's insights are interwoven with case studies from his work as an executive coach and spiritual director. Each chapter contains questions and exercises for further reflection. Thompson concludes the book with recommended practices, disciplines, and resources that will help readers and their organizations enjoy the outer fruits of a richer inner life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bold Book, March 5, 2000
This review is from: The Congruent Life: Following the Inward Path to Fulfilling Work and Inspired Leadership (Paperback)
In this bold book, courageously written by an author who has tasted business success and found it bland, we are challenged to rethink the values we have been taught since preschool-that "success" is measured in quantitative terms, that "happiness" is having the most toys, and that "making it" in business means you have to sacrifice all other aspects of your life-especially the spiritual aspect. He quickly points out that "spiritual" and "religious" are not the same thing. Then he makes a strong case for the idea that, to be an effective leader of an organization, one must be a "deeply spiritual" person. Instead of seeing how fast we can fly around the light bulb, we must consider the value of solitude, of reflection, of self-knowledge, of acknowledging that the world does not revolve around us. Instead, we can live the congruent life only when we connect with a power beyond our own. He makes it clear that all of the world's great religions-Judaism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism, call for this connection. Being spiritually connected does not guarantee business success. Spiritual connection guarantees that, whether or not you are "successful", your life will be richer, more satisfying, more congruent-and the lives of those around you will be enriched as well. You will be a true leader-a servant leader.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Helpful, February 21, 2000
By
This review is from: The Congruent Life: Following the Inward Path to Fulfilling Work and Inspired Leadership (Paperback)
I am the co-owner of a growing software supply company. As you may have guessed, my business does not leave much time for private time, much less time for spirtual reflection. However, I attended a business conference and was recommmended this book. I can not stress enough how helpful it has been. My life feels fufilled - it is now "connected." I no longer feel as if I am leading two lives: one at the office, and one at home. I would recommend The Congruent Life to anyone who feels that their business leaves them cold.

5.0 out of 5 stars worthwhile work, February 16, 2000

At the risk of overstating the case, Michael Thompson has written a book "for the ages." I am awed by his organization, insight, and courage. Anyone interested in leading a fulfilling life (we all have "work" to do) should read, re-read, and ponder, his ideas. He has truly brought together, but more importantly, added much to, the emerging literature heralding a new age of thought about life and work. Please read this work from a truly prophetic voice.
