Book Description

October 2001
An Exciting First Novel Transporting the Reader Into Another Place and Time

In this deceptively simple tale, David Unger, an aging circus magician, recounts his life that began in the late 1800's in Colonial West Africa. His father has abandoned his medical career to mine for gold, along with many others who have fallen under the lure of Africa's riches. David's mother has since left the family and it comes as no surprise when David, who has entered a naval academy, becomes obsessed with Maud King, a British explorer who is 16 years David's senior.

David's life unfolds, spanning two continents, and giving him such adventures as working with and befriending Ghandi, taking part in the Zulu Rebellion, and training in both medicine and magic. But, it is his total and complete devotion to the elusive Maud that provides the principle focus to this memorizing novel.

Told in a style that is understated and elegant, Conjuring Maud has that ability to transport the reader to another place and time in an imaginative portrayal of the longings of the spirit and the triumphs of the heart.

From Booklist

When David, a military student in West Africa, meets Maud, a fellow Briton who is an explorer and ethnologist, he feels an instant connection to her, despite a 16year age difference. He spends a summer vacation with her, collecting specimens, traveling rivers and jungles, and strengthening their connection. On his return to school, he is immediately conscripted into the Zulu Rebellion. Several years pass before he is able to get in touch with her again. At home in Britain, each feels like an outsider, Maud with her rights as a woman curtailed, and David now a med student who can dream only of her, and they cling together as the only constant in each other's life. Eventually love of the jungle and the freedom she had there lures Maud back, and David is unable to stop her. In this compelling and lush tale of colonial West Africa, Danze captures the beauty, wildness, terror, and warmth of the land and those who love it--and love each other. Ellie Barta-Moran

3.0 out of 5 stars Engaging fictionalization of explorer Mary Kingsley, August 14, 2004

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Conjuring Maud (Hardcover)
The lush, vibrant and often harsh landscape of colonial West Africa provides a stunning backdrop to this tale of offbeat characters and an unconventional love.

David Unger, son of a prosperous physician turned destitute prospector, recalls the pivotal events of his life. After attending military school, he serves as an ambulance driver for the British Army during the Zulu Rebellion. From an Indian sergeant-major called Bapu (who will later change his name and become a central figure in Indian history), David learns the secret that enables him to make an astounding escape from a Zulu cave prison. After the war, David travels to England to pursue a medical education.

Foremost in his devotion is the intrepid British explorer Maud King. Maud's character is based on the real-life explorer of the period, Mary Kingsley. Sixteen years David's senior, Maud captivates him as no other woman ever will. The two share more than just an affinity for the peoples, flora and fauna of West Africa. They are soul mates in the deepest sense of the term. While their age difference raises eyebrows amongst Maud's fellow gentry in England, the true obstacle to their happiness is Maud's passion for her work.

Mr. Danze fills this short tale with unforgettable secondary characters and subplots and wraps the whole package in a spare, elegant prose that reads easily and suits his subject matter well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A work of literary magic, December 12, 2001
This review is from: Conjuring Maud (Hardcover)
Philip Danze's Conjuring Maud is a novel about David Unger, an aging circus magician who recounts his younger days in colonial West Africa, and how his profession changed from medicine to magic. The heart of the novel lies in David's unusual, close, and sometimes erotic relationship to Maud King (loosely based on the British feminist and explorer Mary Kingsley), a British explorer and ethnologist 16 years older than David, whose devotion to the resplendence of Africa and its people is unmatched among mortals. Liquid, subtle, and at times bittersweet in its mystery, Conjuring Maud is a work of literary magic, transporting the reader back in time to life in colonial Africa with its careful attention to detail.
