4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice
I first tried solid shaving soap after I tired of driving over mountains only to find my shaving kit filled with the foam from a leaky can. Solid shaving soap not only solved the leaky can problem, it has a comparable price, lasts longer, takes up a fraction of the space and works every bit as well -- better when used with a brush (and even better than that with a proper...

I first tried solid shaving soap after I tired of driving over mountains only to find my shaving kit filled with the foam from a leaky can. Solid shaving soap not only solved the leaky can problem, it has a comparable price, lasts longer, takes up a fraction of the space and works every bit as well -- better when used with a brush (and even better than that with a proper up and down brush stroke.)

Colonel Ichabod Conk Lime Shave Soap is a glycerine based soap that is more expensive than, but superior to non glycerine based soaps such as Van Der Hagen Deluxe Shave Soap - 2.5 oz, or Williams Mug Shaving Soap - 1.7 Oz; however, Colonel Conk is slightly irritating, it stings just a bit if you leave it on too long (but stops stinging as soon as you wash it off.)

Colonel Conk is not as good -- or as expensive -- as the magnificent European shaving creams like Proraso Eucalyptus Shaving Cream Tube, yet it gives great lather and a buttery smooth shave with no need for aftershave (though you may still want one), and leaves a very nice scent that is light, does not overpower, and goes well with the classic light or citrus colognes.

Like all such soaps, Conk fits perfectly into a Dark Wood Shave Bowl with Lid. Make sure to use with plenty of hot water, a double edge razor and a good badger hair brush, and be sure to protect your brush with a good stand too, such as a Nickel Shaving Brush Holder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Soap for a wet shaver!, September 12, 2008
Well, I am a few months into my DE wet shaving practice. Since abandoning the Mach 3 capitalist garbage, my life has improved greatly. Never again. Never will I use that Fusion, "Super technology, flies like an airplane, cleans your kitchen and takes out your trash, hacks up your face for 30$ a refill pack." razor.

Anyway, the soap.
I have tried many Soaps and Creams for shaving and Col. Conk is as great a soap as any of the other 40$ brands. I have a wooden container of Truefitt and Hill soap in my bathroom and I haven't used it in weeks due to this little 3.00$ miracle.

My Taylor of Old Bond Street creams have been sitting in my medicine cabinet because the Col. whipped them into shape.

The bay rum soap is Glycerin based, so you may have to adjust your lathering a little bit, if you are used to triple milled hard soaps like T&H.

Make sure you get A LOT of the soap from the puck into your brush.
To build a lather, Whip it HARD and fast for a good minute in your bowel. Make sure to add little drops of water every 15 seconds or so.

Keep Whipping it good, Grandpa!

you should get one of the best lathers for a shave you ever had!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Shave, November 7, 2005
This review is from: Col. Conk World's Famous Shaving Soap, Almond (Net Weight 2.25 Oz) (Health and Beauty)
I've been on the quest for the perfect shave ever since I started shaving, which incidentally, is the day I realized I really didn't like shaving very much.

Combined with a Gillette Mach 3 Turbo razor, this soap gives as close to a perfect shave as I've ever experienced. Using this razor/soap combo, I am able to shave AGAINST the grain. I still use other shaving products for convenience, but when I really want a great shave, I reach for the Colonel Ichabod Conk.

By the way, the soap comes in a little plastic container that can be closed, so there's no need to put the soap in a mug or other container. This means it won't take up much space in your medicine cabinet.

I am fairly new to wet shaving and have only my experience with Proraso shaving cream and Geo. F. Trumper sandalwood shaving soap to use as a comparison. I am a fan of Bay Rum, so I thought I would give Col Conks Bay Rum shaving soap a shot. The price was definitely right. The scent reminds me of a traditional barbershop. It's a light, classic scent that was my favorite among the three products I've tried so far. I just wish the product performed as well as it smells. I used my shaving brush to create a lather directly on my face for approximately one minute, just as I had with my other products. It wasn't as thick or slippery as the Proraso cream. The Trumper soap created a similar amount of lather, but the lubricity seemed slightly better with the Trumper product. As far as efficacy goes, Proraso is the victor, with the Trumper's in second and Conks bringing up the rear. Conks is the least expensive of the three, but the most important attribute for any shaving soap/cream for me is how it affects my shave. As always with products of this sort, your milage may vary and this may work very well for you. I'd choose it over your average grocery store goo, but as the worst performer in my medicine cabinet, I will probably look at other products the next time I go shopping.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Soap for the Price, May 6, 2007

This is a great soap for the price. It allows me to get a close shave and does not dry out my skin like other shaving products. The only shaving prep that I like better is Tom's of Maine shaving cream.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for air travel, July 2, 2007

This review is from: Col. Conk World's Famous Shaving Soap, Almond (Net Weight 2.25 Oz) (Health and Beauty)
We originally bought Colonel Conk shaving soap when liquid, gel or cream toiletries were suddenly not allowed in carry-on luggage onboard airplanes. We bought a shaving brush to go with it and my husband was really pleased with the result. Nice lather with a pleasant fragrance.

My husband flies very frequently, and when he's shaving at home he still sometimes uses the canned shaving gel, but even though toiletries under 3oz are allowed on airplanes these days he continues to carry Colonel Conk with him on the road instead of shaving gel or cream. I'd estimate he uses it about 4-5 days a week and at that rate one tub has lasted many months.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smells great, works well., January 30, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The only complaint I have with this product is that the smell doesn't stick around as long as I'd like! Of course, this isn't a defect of the product at all, as it's shaving soap, not an after-shave of any kind.

It's simply and effectively packaged in thin plastic; if you're worried about how sleek your bathroom looks, you'll want to drop it into a separate tub of some sort.

The soap works up a pretty good lather reasonably easily. While this is my first Cake o' Shaving Soap, I am happy with it, and would recommend it to others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, May 22, 2010

I just recently switched from a contemporary razor (Mach 91 30 blade blah blah - whatever) to a safety razor (Merkur Model 180 Long Handled Safety Razor). I made the switch because I was getting tired of the prices of the replacement blades for the new razors and after some research found that safety razors can give a much better shave. Along with the razor switch I swapped out my gel shaving cream for this Colonel Conk. I have to say I'm really impressed with the difference and despite a rough start I'm really happy I made the switch.

SCENT
The soap has subtle bay rum scent that is pretty nice. I really like it though because it's subtle enough not to really be noticed after the shave. This is nice because it won't conflict with any other products you may be using (aftershave, cologne, etc.)

LATHER
Now I'll admit there is a certain finesse involved in creating and applying a nice lather. I won't go into detail here but I will recommend that you do a little research to help you get started if this is your first shaving 'soap'. I struggled a bit the first few shaves. I found YouTube very helpful, just do some quick searches, there's tons of videos showing you how to make a good lather. Essentially the trick is just finding a nice balance of the soap and water and whipping it up.

On a side note, a trick to getting the soap to fill in a container is to cut it up into chunks and microwave it in the container. Make sure you do it in short 10sec bursts so you don't burn the soap, two was enough to melt it for me. Then just let it cool and it'll look like it was made for the container. I use a small bowl to keep mine in, just make sure whatever you use is microwave safe if you're going to nuke it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, June 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered this soap when I decided to start shaving with a straight razor. I haven't found someone to adequately sharpen the razor I bought, but I decided to give the shaving soap a try with my Fusion. WOW!

I have been using it for almost four weeks now, and what amazing results!

- I'm getting much closer, smoother shaves.
- No shaving bumps!
- Not a single nick!
- Smells wonderful, although the scent fades quickly.
- I am actually shaving faster now.
- After almost thirty shaves, the bar still looks new!

All in all, an incredible value, and I will definitely be sticking with this product.

The fragrance was dissapointing being on the light side, but the soap gave a great shave. No drag or burning and left with smooth face.
