This is a great soap for the price. It allows me to get a close shave and does not dry out my skin like other shaving products. The only shaving prep that I like better is Tom's of Maine shaving cream.

Well, I am a few months into my DE wet shaving practice. Since abandoning the Mach 3 capitalist garbage, my life has improved greatly. Never again. Never will I use that Fusion, "Super technology, flies like an airplane, cleans your kitchen and takes out your trash, hacks up your face for 30$ a refill pack." razor.

Anyway, the soap.
I have tried many Soaps and Creams for shaving and Col. Conk is as great a soap as any of the other 40$ brands. I have a wooden container of Truefitt and Hill soap in my bathroom and I haven't used it in weeks due to this little 3.00$ miracle.

My Taylor of Old Bond Street creams have been sitting in my medicine cabinet because the Col. whipped them into shape.

The bay rum soap is Glycerin based, so you may have to adjust your lathering a little bit, if you are used to triple milled hard soaps like T&H.

Make sure you get A LOT of the soap from the puck into your brush.
To build a lather, Whip it HARD and fast for a good minute in your bowel. Make sure to add little drops of water every 15 seconds or so.

Keep Whipping it good, Grandpa!

you should get one of the best lathers for a shave you ever had!

I used this puck a couple of times and I wasn't really impressed with the lather, scent, or the overall consistency of this soap. The smell is extremely faint, and I don't really smell the bay rum. I'm a fan of bay rum, but the scent left me feeling extremely disappointed. I'm rating this product so low because I feel this is an inferior product and also because there isn't an ingredient list available to the public. I had to send an email to info@colconkproducts.com just to get an ingredient list. Below are the ingredients:

Triethanolamine
Glycerin
SLES (a variation of sodium Laureth Sulfite)
DI Water
Propylene Glycol
Soap Flakes
Stearic Acid
Tatrasodium EDTA
Titanium Dioxide
Polysorbate-20
Fragrance

Edit: I stopped using the soap after a couple uses because my face would break out in a rash. Here's the ingredients, you can make your own decisions.

Honestly I have no right to be doing a review since I have very little experience with shaving lathers from either cans, soaps, gels or any other types. Mostly I would just shave in the shower and never even bothered using any kind of lathers so really I can't compare this to anything. I'm new to wet shaving and double edge razors so I added this soap to my new shaving kit because of the outstanding reviews.

First off it takes time and patience to create the perfect lather also practice. I've been getting that down and it can be fun creating your own lather and brushing it on your face. There is a distinctive feeling of class shaving the old fashioned way but at the same time it can be considered a chore and time consuming when running late for an important meeting. When not in a rush it can be a relaxing and pleasurable process. A good badger hair brush can make a difference in the lather process.

The soap cakes are small about half the size of a jello cup and come in a thin plastic case suitable for travel. It's not water tight but as long as you wash the soap before storing it, it should be fine. I believe these should be small enough for airplane travel since the limit is 3 Oz and these are 2.25 Oz.

Second and my biggest concern about this soap, specifically the Bay Rum soap is the scent. Some say it has the scent of an old fashioned barbershop. That may be true but when I first received the soap I found it to be very masculine in scent but at the same time it reminds me of an old man. The Old Spice products have a scent that is distinctive to being used by older men and so does Col. Conk's Bay Rum Shaving Soap. At least this is my take on it. It smells like an old man and since I am not an old man I was not too fond of it's scent.

This stuff works very well, I actually prefer it to some soaps that cost six times the price. Great volumes of slippery lather, and a nice subtle scent. I'm not ordinarily a fan of bay rum, as it's generally too strong and sickly sweet, but at this low concentration it's very nice and has really grown on me. The scent does not linger, so it won't interfere with your aftershave or cologne.

You can certainly use it right out of the simple package, although it may not be something you want to leave out on the counter. I pop the puck into an small, inexpensive bowl (from the local Chinese market!)and heat it in the microwave for about 15 seconds. It quickly melts into the form of the bowl, and cools right back down in a few minutes.

The only complaint I have with this product is that the smell doesn't stick around as long as I'd like! Of course, this isn't a defect of the product at all, as it's shaving soap, not an after-shave of any kind.

It's simply and effectively packaged in thin plastic; if you're worried about how sleek your bathroom looks, you'll want to drop it into a separate tub of some sort.

The soap works up a pretty good lather reasonably easily. While this is my first Cake o' Shaving Soap, I am happy with it, and would recommend it to others.
