5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Bass That Nobody Has Ever Heard Of, January 14, 2009
This review is from: Conklin Guitars GT-5 5-String Bass (Wine)
The extreme positioning of the Conklin's horns caught my eye at a well-known national guitar franchise location many years ago, and prompted me to pick it up and play it. I was hooked instantly by its solid feel throughout the neck and body, as well as its weight that was oddly well-balanced. I went home to get my checkbook, but when I returned a half-hour later to the store, it was already gone and I was sad. But that experience kept the Conklin name in the back of my head.

In the years since then, I've found and owned two Conklin GT-4s (both the wine and natural finishes) and replaced them both with the Conklin GT-5 (in the wine finish). The balance is incredible and the tone is sufficiently meaty, but can be scaled back with the on-board EQ and pick-up selection knobs. The extended lower bout makes reaching the higher notes very easy. The neck is quite thin and easy to play.

This is the last and only bass I will ever own.

Conklin no longer produces the GrooveTools series for the mass consumer market, preferring to focus solely on custom instruments, so the last GT series basses sold here are likely the last ones forever, except for the second-hand market.
