Biography

Consisting of rapper/singer/songwriter Phonte and producer Nicolay, The Foreign Exchange came together via the online hip-hop community Okayplayer.com in 2002. After trading files through Instant Messenger for over a year, Nicolay (living in his native Holland at the time) and Phonte (a Raleigh, NC resident) completed their debut album before they ever met each other in person. The album,… Read more in Amazon's Foreign Exchange Store

Editorial Reviews

The story has been told numerous times and is refreshing each time it is told again. Phonte of Little Brother (North Carolina) met producer Nicolay online at Okayplayer.com. Through countless messageboard correspondences and instant messages (never meeting in person), Phonte and Nicolay as The Foreign Exchange created the critically acclaimed album, Connected, a gorgeous and reflective blend of hip-hop, R&B, and electronic soul. After having a #1 CMJ hip-hop charting album, stellar reviews (XXL, The Source, Billboard, and many others), and MTV You Hear It First feature, and a video for the single "Sincere" on VH1 Soul, the Foreign Exchange give their fans one more treat. Now available on CD is the Connected Instrumentals. The CD includes instrumentals for the tracks "Sincere", "Raw Life", "All That You Are", "Nic’s Groove", "Come Around", and the bonus tracks featured on the full length CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!, August 24, 2005
This review is from: Connected: Instrumental (Audio CD)
I love instrumental hip hop music, and this CD tops the list of every one of the instrumental hip hop CD's I have ever purchased, including Pete Rock (and I am a HUGE Pete Rock fan!) Nicolay just came out of nowhere for me and I am so pleasantly surprised. This CD stays in my car and I am trying to introduce it to any one who has yet to hear of it! If you like smooth hip hop styled music this is a MUST HAVE CD. Be on the lookout for more music from Nicolay, this cat is hot!

4.0 out of 5 stars Smooth tracks, June 28, 2010

Nicolay has always come through with his selection of beats and samples. This album is smoother than is other LPs. The title is a dead give-a-way on why.

If you like this album, you'll definitely need to pick up his new album: City Lights Vol 2. Hands down one of his best.
