Grade 4-7-- A general look at the state's history, geography, government, arts, and points of interest. Strongest are the historical chapters; the stereotype of Iowa as strictly an agricultural state is perpetuated by the statement (appearing at least twice) that 93% of the land is devoted to farming. In the section on politics, Kent states that "towns shine with prosperity. Slums are few and crime is rare." There are no comparisons to other states or statistics provided to back up these claims. A balance of historical black-and-white pictures and full-color photos match up well with text. It's difficult to cover an entire state in a short book without overgeneralizing; Kent offers an attractive overview with appropriate mention of the variety of ethnic and cultural opportunities. Chapters are subdivided to make this an easy reference for report writing. A summary "Facts at a Glance" is appended, as well as a biographical section on important people from Iowa's past and present and a detailed index. --Bonnie L. Raasch, C. B. Great book for basic info and stats on Connecticut. Slightly outdated; 3rd edition will have more recent stats.
