John Banks' insightful book about the participation of CT residents in the Battle of Antietam is an excellent piece of American history. It is written in clear, very readable prose. It keeps the readers interest from page one. Banks not only reprises the details of the battle in terms of the individuals who fought it; he includes the perspectives of nurses, undertakers, family members, and even deserters. He admirably shows the ripple effect through time that the battle had on those who were killed, wounded and psychologically damaged. He also delineates the activities of CT communities to commemorate the war up to the present. He doesn't pull any punches, the gristly horror of America's most brutal conflict is starkly portrayed. But the the human dimension he brings to the narrative makes for a balanced look at the fight and its consequences. If you are a Civil War or Connecticut history buff, this book is right up your alley.

John Banks' book on Connecticut Soldiers at Antietam is a superb collection of stories about individual Soldiers fighting and dying during the bloodiest day in American history. He is a masterful storyteller and this book is a must read for anyone interested in the human dimension of war. No matter your level of interest in the Civil War or the Battle of Antietam, this is a wonderful book to gain an understanding of what it was like for the average soldier to experience the intensity of combat. One of my ancestors, Captain Newton Manross was highlighted in the book along with many others. It was very touching to read the stories of both the survivors and those who gave their lives.

Excellent book from John Banks. Details the life and times of individual officers and soldiers from Connecticut whom fought at the Battle of Antietam. An easy read and hard to put down once you start. Definitively a refreshing change from the battle reports, maps, and statistics content that Civil War books often contain. Looking forward to purchasing the Hidden History of Connecticut Union Soldiers from Mr. Banks due out in late October 2015.
