Book Description

August 4, 2009
Designed for textile artists and quilters seeking innovative ways to advance their craft, the 30 short, structured exercises presented here will spur creativity and instill confidence. Each carefully photographed exercise is split into three components: experimenting with fine art techniques and various mediums, including sculpture, painting, and photography; developing skills through use of a sketchbook, collage, or mixed media; and turning the concept into a usable stitch. Scattered throughout the book are “Art Masterclasses,” which focus on such subjects as landscape, nature, the human form, and architecture.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's all about art, November 16, 2009

This review is from: Connecting Art to Stitch (Hardcover)
Sandra's latest book is a visual feast, like her previous books. This one in a way goes back one step, to focus mainly on how textile artists can use various fine art techniques to improve their composition, texture and colour skills. Stitch is the final stage in a fairly lengthy process.

Sandra shows her own sketchbooks as source materials in all her books, and this one gives even more instruction on how to develop sketchbooks and allow your creativity to evolve through them. There are no easy shortcuts to doing the work, and in this case, it is playing with pencils, charcoal, crayons, and paints.

This book demands that you do something, whether focused or playful. Most of the illustrations are art related rather than stitch related, so it is more of a manual of inspiration and less of a picture candy book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, this book has all the right words!, March 10, 2011

This review is from: Connecting Art to Stitch (Hardcover)
Sandra Meech succeeds in detailing how to make the connections between Art's visual stimulus to incorporating that specific imagery into your work. Sandra makes clear how to visually understand the forms and constructs in artwork that can be translated into stitch. This is accomplised by her identification of texture, line weight, and color in a painted surface. Sandra then explains how texture can be made using stitches. She describes what kind of stitch will create the same image as seen in the painted surface as well as what type of threads and how they are applied to the stitching surface. Excellent examples are given. Practice exercises lead from the application of basic techniques through complex constructions involving many techniques. This book made sense to me. It had just the right words to get the idea into my mind and out through my hands.
