It's all about art,

Sandra's latest book is a visual feast, like her previous books. This one in a way goes back one step, to focus mainly on how textile artists can use various fine art techniques to improve their composition, texture and colour skills. Stitch is the final stage in a fairly lengthy process.
Sandra shows her own sketchbooks as source materials in all her books, and this one gives even more instruction on how to develop sketchbooks and allow your creativity to evolve through them. There are no easy shortcuts to doing the work, and in this case, it is playing with pencils, charcoal, crayons, and paints. This book demands that you do something, whether focused or playful. Most of the illustrations are art related rather than stitch related, so it is more of a manual of inspiration and less of a picture candy book.

Sandra Meech succeeds in detailing how to make the connections between Art's visual stimulus to incorporating that specific imagery into your work. Sandra makes clear how to visually understand the forms and constructs in artwork that can be translated into stitch. This is accomplised by her identification of texture, line weight, and color in a painted surface. Sandra then explains how texture can be made using stitches. She describes what kind of stitch will create the same image as seen in the painted surface as well as what type of threads and how they are applied to the stitching surface. Excellent examples are given. Practice exercises lead from the application of basic techniques through complex constructions involving many techniques. This book made sense to me. It had just the right words to get the idea into my mind and out through my hands.

This inspired me to get moving and being more creative. There are exercises to open up intuitive guideance and have given me many new insights. Sandra took me to new areas that I previously had not used in my fiber arts. I was thrilled to see the results that took place as I looked at things in a new way...This is a treasure in my library and will inspire me for many years...highly recommend it!

This is a beautiful, inspiring book of ideas, quilts and fiberart. Of particular note, is that this book introduces the work of many artists from outside the United States, who may not be as familiar, but who are doing innovative and exciting work. In addition, many of the featured artists have beautiful web sites that exhibit more of their work.
The writer takes us through the design process, including techniques, concepts and ideas. Super color photographs throughout, great content. Another winner from Sandra Meech!
