Book Description

0470021632 978-0470021637 May 9, 2005 1
A thorough knowledge of modern connection-oriented networks is essential to understanding the current and near-future state of networking.
This book provides a complete overview of connection-oriented networks, discussing both packet-switched and circuit-switched networks, which, though seemingly different, share common networking principles. It details the history and development of such networks, and defines their terminology and architecture, before progressing to aspects such as signaling and standards. There is inclusive coverage of SONET/SDH, ATM networks, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), optical networks, access networks and voice over ATM and MPLS.
Connection-oriented Networks:
* Provides in-depth, systematic coverage of several connection-oriented networks in a single volume
* Explains topics such as the Generic Framing Procedure, Label Distribution Protocols, Wavelength Routing Optical Networks, Optical Burst Switching, and Access Networks in detail
* Illustrates all concepts with problems and simulation projects to test and deepen your understanding
* Includes an accompanying website with solutions manual and complete set of PowerPoint presentations for each chapter
Senior undergraduate and graduate students in telecommunication and networking courses, as well as networking engineers, will find this comprehensive guide to connection-oriented packet-switched and circuit-switched networks useful for their training. The book presents tried and tested material based on an existing, successful course.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best and only book devoted to connection-oriented networks., September 14, 2005
This review is from: Connection-Oriented Networks: SONET/SDH, ATM, MPLS and Optical Networks (Hardcover)
Finally I found a book that explains things very well in a
systematic structure. It is readable. The author explains the most difficult subjects very clearly. I really enjoyed reading it and used it on my courses as a textbook. The free recorded lectures are also available through the author's homepage (http://www.csc.ncsu.edu/faculty/perros/ConOriented.html). This is also a big plus both to understand the material and for the instructors.

This review is from: Connection-Oriented Networks: SONET/SDH, ATM, MPLS and Optical Networks (Hardcover)
Very detailed, rather boring at times, but that's probably due to the topic. Explanations of detailed concepts are a little brief and kind of fly through. Covers a lot of material well.

5.0 out of 5 stars University-grade material, but worth it., April 1, 2006

This review is from: Connection-Oriented Networks: SONET/SDH, ATM, MPLS and Optical Networks (Hardcover)
First some context: My university background is in humanities, but I spent dotcom and aftewarded becoming an ISP sysadmin and junior network admin. My academic mathematic and science skills leave much to be desired. The presented a problem for me when I first purchased Perros' book. From the start, Perros makes it clear that the book is for exceptional network-specializing undergraduates, graduate students or networking professionals He wasn't kidding.

That said, it is a testament to Perros' writing that I've found myself learning about the physics of light, for example, or obscure mathematical symbols (to me anyway). I've found his book to be dense with information, but in the 5 months I have had it, it is something I can continually refer back to, and learn more as I'm able.

Of late I've been reading up on MPLS, and his chapters on MPLS was refreshing. Of all the books I've read (mostly Cisco based), and RFC's, Perros' book helped me understand MPLS the most.
Maybe it will be the same for you.

I would recommend this book to someone who has the ability to properly absorb it. And despite my own shortcomings, I'm very glad I bought this book.
