The best and only book devoted to connection-oriented networks.,
This review is from: Connection-Oriented Networks: SONET/SDH, ATM, MPLS and Optical Networks (Hardcover)
Finally I found a book that explains things very well in a
systematic structure. It is readable. The author explains the most difficult subjects very clearly. I really enjoyed reading it and used it on my courses as a textbook. The free recorded lectures are also available through the author's homepage (http://www.csc.ncsu.edu/faculty/perros/ConOriented.html). This is also a big plus both to understand the material and for the instructors.

Very detailed, rather boring at times, but that's probably due to the topic. Explanations of detailed concepts are a little brief and kind of fly through. Covers a lot of material well.

University-grade material, but worth it.,

First some context: My university background is in humanities, but I spent dotcom and aftewarded becoming an ISP sysadmin and junior network admin. My academic mathematic and science skills leave much to be desired. The presented a problem for me when I first purchased Perros' book. From the start, Perros makes it clear that the book is for exceptional network-specializing undergraduates, graduate students or networking professionals He wasn't kidding.
That said, it is a testament to Perros' writing that I've found myself learning about the physics of light, for example, or obscure mathematical symbols (to me anyway). I've found his book to be dense with information, but in the 5 months I have had it, it is something I can continually refer back to, and learn more as I'm able. Of late I've been reading up on MPLS, and his chapters on MPLS was refreshing. Of all the books I've read (mostly Cisco based), and RFC's, Perros' book helped me understand MPLS the most. Maybe it will be the same for you. I would recommend this book to someone who has the ability to properly absorb it. And despite my own shortcomings, I'm very glad I bought this book.

My motivation for purchasing this text was for a graduate level course on High-Speed Networking in Electrical Engineering. The text was extremely useful with clear illustrations, detailed formulas, and most importantly well written text. The book provided the level of clarity necessary to truly grasp the material in a simple straightforward manner without the common condescending overtone often found in most advanced academic material. As such, the text was used as the primary source for learning during the course while the lecture material merely supplemented. I would strongly recommend purchasing this book whether it is required for a course or if you are simply trying to get a better understanding of the subject.

First of all this book is too academic and second everything that is there in this book can be found online. The content is definitely not worth the cost. I bought this book only because my course adviser made is compulsory. |
