So there are many dock extenders in the 20-30 dollar range that fix the otterbox problem (where you cant plug your phone into your stereo while its in its box). I saw this one for 4 bucks and thought, what the hell, I'll give it a shot.

I had to be very careful in plugging it in - it didn't seem to fit the connecter super well, so I had to look very closely at what I was doing. Once I got it plugged in, it initially made this static-y sound through the stereo speakers, so I thought the sound quality might be bad.

Once I plugged the phone in, the music sounded fine. HOwever, I noticed that if you twist the cord one way or the other, the amount of sound decreases or increases from each speaker, so you have to be careful to have the cord in the right position to get the right sound.

Once I put my phone back in the otterbox case, however, the plug wouldn't fit. This plug is wider than a typical apple plug (which does fit). I've read about people using nail files to file away enough of hte plastic on the sides to make the cord fit. I haven't tried that yet with this one; I'll update this when I do.

At this time, the sound quality seems questionable and I can't plug my phone into the cord while it's in the otterbox, so I'm not getting what I wanted out of this. Therefore 2 stars.

So if you're wondering if this will let you play music on your stereo even while your phone is encased in an otterbox, yes, it will.

I'll try to update after I've had it for a while if it falls apart easily or something like that --

In my car the dock wire does not reach the dash where I wanted to mount my iPod/iPhone dock. Using this I was able to hide the connecting parts and all the mess under the plastics, run the extension out to the dash, and mount a clean looking dock. It does a good job, does not pick up noise, and all the wires are connected through, so even video works (but only because the car handles it). Does exactly what it says with no fuss. The device end has little click-in hooks to keep it connected to your dock or device, so I'm very pleased with it.

BEWARE:

Extension cables are not magic. It does not enable or restore missing functionality from your dock, it just extends an existing connection. The connection at the ends is the same size as the first generation of dock connectors, so I can see some case users hoping this is something it is not. It does not tell your dock to charge/send video/sync when the things at each end ignore each other. There are ways to solve the other problems, but this is just an extension cord.

I was afraid of this, but the cable does not work. I have ran into this before and these cables are tough to find. Would not recommend.

The item connected between my Ipod speakers and my Itouch. The cable generated enough noise on the speakers that I can't use it. It didn't matter if I shifted the cable around or checked the connections. Thing is, the item was $[...] and the shipping $[...], so if I ship it back, I still got ripped off, didn't I? It came in a tiny package probably costing $[...], so the profit was in the shipping. The cable is junk. I spent about $[...] and got a very acceptable substitute from Best Buy that doesn't generate noise and if I had a problem all I had to do was return it to the store. Sometimes the cheapest item is a rip-off

Do not buy this if you are looking for something that will fit your Otterbox. I bought this for connectivity to a Sony docking station to my iPhone without having to take of the Otterbox cover. IT DOES NOT FIT. PERIOD! If you want to make it fit, you'll have to file away either some of your Otterbox case, or the extension cord. [...]

If someone else has found something that will work for an Otterbox case, please comment on this so I can find the right product. This one is not it if you're looking to use an Otterbox case with your iPhone. [...]

It doesn't work! I've since done a lot of research on these extenders. Without all 30 pins being used, there is no way to guarantee that the cable can perform all the functions you're looking for. I opened this cable up, and saw that it is using 4 pins for USB data transmission, but that is it. This means it will sync the phone and charge the phone but it will not transmit music. Not as promised!

I opened the casing and re-soldered the pins for my specific purpose, but I wouldn't recommend anyone buy this cheap cable. The cableJive cable is more expensive, but offers a ful 30 pin connection, so you know it will work with your peripherals.

I think I can clear up some of the confusion on these cables and why some people are really happy with theirs while others say they do not work at all. In January I bought a Dock Connector Extender Extension Cable for Apple iPad iPhone iPod (Black)on Amazon. I give it a 5 star! It works EXACTLY as advertised and I LOVE it!!! I can charge my phone and play music using my big speakers, etc. without taking my iPhone 4s out of it's case. I don't know if it transfers data, I don't use it for that. I teach line dance and have a small studio in my basement, I also teach at a studio in town. I thought it would be nice to have a couple more of these extenders so I wouldn't have to remember to bring that one every time I taught somewhere besides at home. So, To make sure I got the same thing, I went into my Amazon history, clicked on the first Dock Connector Extender I bought in January and ordered 2 more. These cables do NOT work as advertised!! I give them no stars! These cables are thinner then the first one, and they only charge my phone. I can not play music using them, which, for me, was the whole purpose for buying them!! Again, since I don't transfer data with them, I don't know if they will work for that or not. There is only one difference on Amazon that I've seen in their ad for these cables and that is, they came from different suppliers and if I were to order one today it would come from yet another supplier. The first supplier was Omni Tech Supply, Inc./4 Tech (the one that works). The second supplier was Buyincoins - Hong Kong (the ones that don't work), and the third supplier IF I were to order again is now Clearance Masters - Hong Kong. For those of you still looking, make sure you are getting the thicker cable (it must have more pins or wires or something in order to play music). What we have here is 2 products being sold as the same thing, I've called Amazon to make them aware of the discrepancy in their ad. Good Luck!
