Book Description

January 1, 2005
Both experienced collectors and beginners will find these guides useful in identifying antiques in many areas and determining their styles and periods.

Not everyone has enjoyed owning fine furniture, ceramics, glass, or silver, but almost everyone has had toys. It is no wonder that this has become one of the greatest areas for collecting, for it caters to that longing for nostalgia in so many people. Here is a useful guide for both amateur and serious collectors.

2.0 out of 5 stars A little of this,a little of that, not much of anything., January 12, 2009
This review is from: Connoisseur's Guide to Antique Toys (Hardcover)

This book certainly doesn't live up to what it suggests on the cover. It ia an extremely basic look a antique toys;and to call it "A Connoisseur's Guide" is a gross exaggeration.Although the quality of construction, paper, printing and photographs are all very good;that is all that can be said about it.The extent of coverage of antique toys is very cursory and the text, even more so.There are areas of toys that are not even covered and a diaapportionate amount of space given to dolls and dollhouses-and even that is very sketchy. The entire book is very european focused. From the book, one would get no idea whatever, that such hugely popular toys in North America, such as electric trains,Tinker Toys, toy guns of all sorts, puppets, models, sling slots, bows and arrows,darts,pick-up-sticks,jacks,and puzzles of all sorts;ever existed. There is some mention of elaborate chess sets and cards, which can hardly be called "toys".
I don't know who this book would impress;certainly not anyone with even a passing fancy or interest in antique toys, let alone any serious collector.
