5.0 out of 5 stars A GLOSSARY of ANTIQUE TERMS -308 pages of definitions - INFORMATIVE and ENGAGING - IMPORTANT TODAY as much as ever!, March 30, 2011
This review is from: The Connoisseur's Handbook of Antique Collecting: A Dictionary of Furniture, Silver, Ceramics, Glass, Fine Art, etc (Hardcover)
This dictionary contains the definitions of terms used in the world of collecting antique's. Covered here are terms of: "Furniture, silver, ceramics, glass, fine art" and SO MUCH MORE. The items covered are almost endless.
From defining what 'Paste jewellery' is, to a 'Windsor chair', from 'Parian ware' to 'Hunting swords'. The definition of a 'Pontil mark' on blown glass, to the origin of 'Chess-boards'
The knowledge contained in this book brings to light many facets of antique's, therebye assisting in the accurate identification of an item. Additionally, these descriptions aid in spotting an over-looked treasure.
This book is with-out a doubt, the single most beneficial compiled information, at one's fingertips, that I've ever come across. This information being in a dictionary form of definitions, is detailed, yet clear and concise, and is easy to understand. The definitions are not 'wordy', most consists of only a few sentences, makeing this a quick source of information.
A wonderful book with a wealth of information, and a treasure to own in addition to, books on antiques, and the internet.
This 320 page book contains:
1. Preface, 1 page.
2. Introduction, 3 pages.
3. Terms and definitions, (words, titles, or items), 308 pages.
4. Suggested further reading, 4 pages.
The first edition copyright is 1960, before the world accepted 'vintage' in place of, or in addition to, items that are actually antique's.
Since 1960 there have been additional pressings, and updated versions of this same book.
This vast glossary is interesting, informative, fascinating and engaging for any history or antique buff. This companion of knowledge of antique's helps you discover what your missing, and clarify what you have.
