Spanish speakers are able to know more about Boston
For the first time, there is a book about Boston written in Spanish. Conociendo Boston highlights the history associated with all the rich and impressive places in Boston from the perspective of a Latin American immigrant. Vélez, a well-established lawyer in Colombia, came to the U.S. in 1997 to live closer to his daughter, who was then residing in Boston. Although well educated in his native country, here he worked parking cars as a valet, cleaning offices as a janitor, and giving tours in Spanish around Boston - all of them far cries from the prestige of an attorney
Thanks to his brilliant and colorful mind, his fine educational background, and his experience of coming to the U.S. as an immigrant, Vélez could create the perfect book for any Hispanic interested in visiting, living, or studying in Boston.
The book is already reaching important members of the academic world and community leaders. John Edmunds, Harvard PhD and Economics Professor at Babson College, said that "Conociendo Boston is obligatory for all residents, visitors, and Hispanics that want to be informed about this marvelous city that has contributed so much to the development of human kind."; while Jose Masso, director of the Massachusetts office of Puerto Rican Federal Affairs and host of the radio show Con Salsa, stated that "In addition to the high quality standards of the book, Conociendo Boston is a very meaningful work. At last it is possible to tell the history of Boston with Latin flavor."
Beginning with the Puritan roots of Boston, Vélez provides critical background information about how the city came to be and some key ideologies that were laid as the city's foundation. But history is just one part of the book - Vélez also talks about the sites to be seen and places to go.
