Editorial Reviews

From the Author

My country endures the highest crime rate in the world.  Police can ONLY make an arrest AFTER a crime has been committed.  Protecting yourself doesn't work if you. like a policeman, have to wait for a crime to occur.  Therefore, this book teaches what to do BEFORE a crime might happen--so it's about prevention.  It teaches how to keep your home UN-burgled, your body UN-raped, and your children UN-abducted.  Sections for teens teach them to arrive at adulthood UN-victimized.  Author is a former Green Beret (10 books--with over 200,000 copies sold) who writes on survival, and surviving crime is successful with pre-crime preparation and knowledge of how to defend and escape if an attack occurs.

From the Back Cover

Author writes:  THIS IS THE BOOK YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT--BECAUSE WITHOUT THIS BOOK, YOU MIGHT NOT LIVE.  See product description.  This book does NOT take a police approach to crime.  It teaches how to escape becoming a victim.

More About the Author

Don does the writing, but in addition to what he knows, he gathers information and updates from long term friends with whom he shared years as a Green Beret. Some technical information (knife sharpening) comes from other experts.

Don has never been employed in a steady, nine-to-five job. In his twenties, he lived and worked in both Europe (Spain, France, and Germany for which he speaks the languages fluently). He then moved to Southeast Asia, where he headquartered in Thailand while traveling to Laos and Cambodia. Upon his return to the US, he carpentered, worked as a USPTA tennis professional, was a volunteer San Diego cop, and speculated in real estate.

In early 1976, Sgt Don Paul was called to active duty as a Green Beret. While jumping into the Panama Jungle at night from 1,000 ft. both parachutes failed---which brought his Special Forces career to a sudden halt. He became a Christian and continues to work for various fundamental churches.

While recuperating in the hospital, he started writing and never stopped. He has traveled all over the world with a computer and frequently works in libraries while waiting to hop. He's visited New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Guam, Okinawa and Korea. He went to Puerto Rico to live and sail on a 30 ft Trimaran but returned due to high crime in the Virgin Islands and piracy at sea. He also lived in Costa Rica.

His how-to books have sold consistently for almost 20 years and he has appeared on over 250 radio and TV shows all over the country.

During the last three years, he has studied acting in Hollywood and appeared in several commercials. He writes and occasionally performs stand-up comedy. He asks young children, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Not that he cares so much about the kids' futures . . . Really, he's looking for suggestions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best all around book on the subject, January 7, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Conquer Crime - How To Be Your Own Bodyguard (Paperback)
This book is unlike most texts on the subject which typically overload you with information on one topic (firearms, martial arts, etc) and then skimp or totally bypass others of great importance. A very well rounded and easy to read manual that touches all bases. It is written for the average person looking to secure themselves and their loved ones from serious crime. A large portion of the book has information that is unique. While most people will not need to employ all of the techniques listed (shooting through electrical conduit to hit a bad guy outside your safe room is a bit extreme), everyone can adopt several of these easy to do measures to make their life safer. Locks, doors, alarms (both electronic and organic [gravel around window areas]) dogs, etc covered in full. An excellent book all around. You might also want to see Massad Ayoob's "Self Defense" -although I would read this book first as I think it is better. An earlier version of this was titled something like "Secure From Crime: How To Be Your Own Bodyguard", but "Conquer Crime" is an improved and expanded text.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Need to Read" for all parents and teenage kids, July 18, 2011
This review is from: Conquer Crime - How To Be Your Own Bodyguard (Paperback)
Don Paul has done it again!!! Taking from his incredible knowledge base, he has written yet another informative, eye opening book of "How To".

The minute I finished this book, I handed it to my 15year old daughter and told her to read it immediately. Once she's done, it will go to my 12 year old son, and then to my wife.

Anyone who has a family needs to read this book! Any single female needs to read this book! I would go as far as saying, anyone between the ages of 12 and 90 needs to read this book. The contents will open your eyes as to the things that can happen in the world today. Although hopefully you will never need to actually use a lot of the information, at the very least you will have the knowledge of what you need to do in the back of your mind and if you do need it, it will be there for you.

Thank you again to Don Paul for writing this book. Don, keep it up! Keep writing these books, the world needs them in this day and age. They are incredibly informative and they are a quick read. These books are not 500 page text books, they usually run just about 70 - 100 pages. You can read them in a sitting or two and they are written in such a way that they are easy to understand and retain the information.

Way to go Don!

2.0 out of 5 stars almost useless, May 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Conquer Crime - How To Be Your Own Bodyguard (Paperback)
Looking to keep yourself and your family safe from crime? If so then this book is NOT for you. Don Paul, a former green beret and cop attempts to teach the reader how to stay safe from crime in this slim paperback. His main point in the book is that you should attempt to prevent crime before it occurs. (Crimes covered in this book range from rape to identity theft.) The suggestions offered in this book are often extreme, and only useful for people who are especially at risk. Some suggestions include using only a P.O. box address and an alias for all of your communications through the mail, home schooling your children, and installing a shotgun that you can shoot remotely in your home. The book is filled with bizzare and useless diagrams, and often contains the authors Christian messages. The book does help however in making the reader more able to identify threats, but does not do well in explaining how to deal with them. While I cannot recommend this book because of its lack of good information, I have benefited from it slightly by learning about how criminals operate and potentional ways to stay out of trouble.
