Book Description
In May 2010 I was diagnosed with high cholesterol. By August 2010 it was coming down and by March 2012 it was staying down at a level considered safe by my doctor, and all without the use of statins.
I couldn't find much advice available, especially on particular foods to avoid or choose, so once my diet plan had worked, I wrote it all down to help other people.
From HEART UK’s dietician, Linda Main: “Liz provides some practical common-sense ideas and advice which she has tried and tested to lower and maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Her results demonstrate how a healthy balanced diet, low in saturated fat and high in wholegrain, fruits and vegetables and containing some cholesterol busting foods such as oats and nuts can be a central part of achieving this.”
I would like to save you from bursting into tears in Tescos when you find that dark chocolate DOES have fat in it … and to help a few more people navigate the possibilities of controlling cholesterol levels naturally and keeping off the pills.
So in this booklet, I’m going to: • Explain the medical bits and show you where you can find more information • Talk about my “rules” and how they are applied in practice • Tell you about some things you’ll be surprised you can eat, and some you’ll be surprised you can’t • Have a quick word about places you can eat out without undermining your diet • Go through some exercise tips
Note: new edition with an extra recipe, more recommendations for eating out, and US as well as UK measurements for cholesterol levels.
Note: I am not a doctor. Show your doctor this book and let them know what you're planning to do.
This first paragraph is an update on the revised edition, December 2012: Thanks to Liz for taking on board the feedback about this book's suitability for the US audience! The revised edition certainly addresses the points I made before and I am encouraged to see the notes on US restaurants. The conversion information from UK to US is very useful, and helped me understand just how high my levels were in comparison to Liz's. I would thoroughly recommend this book as an easy-to-read guide, with so many useful tips and helpful encouragement.
My Original Review: Liz offers some extremely practical advice for those of us with high cholesterol issues, using a diet and exercise approach and avoiding the use of statins. A couple of drawbacks for an American audience: the British medical system has a different way of measuring cholesterol levels which doesn't translate into how we are diagnosed in the US, so it was difficult to understand just how high Liz's levels started out. And although many of the food brands she discusses and recommends are British, and not available in the US, we will surely be able to find equivalents on our visits to the grocery store, and can all become more label conscious. My doctor put me on statins in January after my own attempts with diet and exercise weren't effective enough. Although I know I'll never be statin free as my levels are SO high, I'm hoping that hand-in-hand with Liz's valuable advice and tips on diet and exercise I can at least stay on the lowest possible dose.
I'm a freelance editor, transcriber and writer. Having written lots of content for other people, and having shared my tips on how I lowered my cholesterol with a number of friends, I decided to put together my own e-book to help other people. I enjoyed writing it and have more short guides to come!
