When I was in the fourth grade, we studied about the missions of California and of the Gold Rush, but nothing about how California became part of the United States. It was'nt until I read Bernard De Votos The Year Of Decision 1846 did I have a good understanding of that period of our history.

This book is the very best on the take over of California .from Mexico It is a topic to be covered in the schools. College students would profit greatly by this material especially in the teacher training schools History should be taught the way it happened.
