This is a very enjoyable short story that works on two levels. One is the author running in a marathon, the other is the author as the family member of a person with a mental illness. As someone who has worked in the mental health field for 25 years I was captivated by the latter. I thought that the portrayal of the feelings of a person who tries to be involved and an advocate for a family member, yet needs to live their own life was aptly done. I also enjoyed the details of the marathon and the various stages of exhaustion and elation the runner feels. These stages are parallel to the stages of living through the ups and downs of life with a mentally ill family member some people experience. I highly reccomend this story.
