About the Author

William Benson, BSc, MD, FRCPC (with certification in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology) is a practicing rheumatologist. He was the former Head of Service at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton from 1978-1993. He is also associated with McMaster University in Hamilton and the Father Sean O'Sullivan Research Centre. He has been an active member of the Canadian Rheumatology Association and the American College of Rheumatologists for 20 years. He has taught and lectured extensively, written more than fifty publications on musculosketal diseases, and has participated in over fifty clinical studies.

Wynn Benson, BA, is a graduate of the University of Toronto, where she majored in Art and Art History and Psychology. For the past 11 years she has been involved in health care development and research, particularly in the area of musculoskeletal diseases and rheumatoid arthritis. She has also served on the boards of several community groups.

This textbook still talks about using nsaids for early treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Treating in this manner delays definitive treatment and results in more long-term pain and further joint damage. NSAIDS only cover up the pain and slightly decrease the inflammation, It is necessary to start disease-modifying drugs early in order to have the best chance of obtaining and maintaining full remission. Otherwise the joint damage will just continue.
