5.0 out of 5 stars Great "life lesson" book! January 24, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is like a whole series of selfhelp books all rolled up neatly into 104 pages and disguised as a fiction story! Very clever indeed! You could read this book and not even know that you are learning something. I found myself highlighting and taking notes all through the book, but also really enjoying the story.

This is a short book that could be easily read in a day, but I took 3 days to read it. Why? - well it wasn't slow that's for sure. It was because I didn't want to miss anything! I didn't want to read it too fast and not remember or "get" what it was about. It is kind of like a puzzle story where you have to put it all together and ask hmmm what does she mean by this? It was really fascinating. I definitely took something away from reading this. This is a book I will keep on my nook for future reference!

But don't get me wrong... I said cleverly disguised as a fiction story - because you won't even realize you are learning something! It is very sweet, heartfelt, entertaining and inspirational, with a touch of mystery and magic.

When Ms. Virginia Bean looses her job she goes on a journey with God and discovers what she has inside her that she didn't even know was there. When she meets God he gives her 5 stones (like the 5 stones David used to conquer Goliath). These stones represent exactly what you need in all of life's quests - Listening, Trust, Optimism, Tenacity, and Constancy. Only when Virginia fully develops all these qualities will she be ready to face what life has to throw at her. And life does throw her a few Goliaths!

All of these qualities ( Listening, Trust, Optimism, Tenacity, and Constancy) are traits that everyone needs in their everyday life, not just when trying to find a new job, but when struggling with a relationship, moving, buying a new house, trying to deal with the death of a loved one, anything really that you need help moving on with. Read this first - as a story. But then keep it with you as a reference book for how to use what God gave you for your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredibly interesting and inspirational tale!! January 23, 2012
Format:Paperback
When the company she works for relocates to another state, Virginia Bean loses a job she's held for ten years. With no replacement employment lined up, she's floundering trying to figure out what to do next. Showing up for a job interview, she finds herself embarking on an unexpected spiritual path. Insights, like the fact she hadn't been happy at her previous job, begin to reveal themselves.

Conquering Your Goliaths~ A Parable of the Five Stones by Kathryn Elizabeth Jones is a self-help book contained within a fictionalized story. With each stone Ms. Bean is given, she begins to apply its meaning to her life to make significant changes. Readers follow along with her as she motivates herself to overcome negative thinking and acquire new skills. She also learns to accept that every negative experience she's ever had has been necessary to develop her independence and overall well-being.

Author Kathryn Elizabeth Jones has written a wonderfully interesting and inspirational tale. Listening, Trust, Optimism, Tenacity, and Constancy are the five essential elements required to live a fulfilled existence. By reading this book, anyone can learn to apply them to his or her life. Only when individuals begin to accept the fact that an easy life without trials isn't really worth living, will they truly understand the lessons life is teaching them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walking the Christian Life April 5, 2012
Format:Paperback
I consider Conquering Your Goliaths-A Parable of Five Stones, by Kathryn Elizabeth Jones, to be an allegorical story of the Christian life. The book was slow in getting me into the story, but once the stones started appearing, I wanted to keep reading. These spiritual truths are so vital to the Christian walk, and Kathryn puts the journey into a whole new perspective that is enlightening and yet very real to everyone's life.

The story of salvation is told through the wine-press of the Old Testament. It's subtle, but the message is there. If you miss it, go back and re-read it. It's precious in its explanation. It's the necessary component to the messages of the five stones.

Kathryn uses David as the prime example in her story. He slew Goliath with a stone, but he had to learn the principles behind the five stones before he become successful in his walk with God. We subsequently become acquainted with the stones given by God-listening, trust, optimism, tenacity, and constancy-that are all in relation to God, His word, prayer, standing strong, and telling others.

Throughout the story we find that Ms. Virginia Bean becomes fearful, makes mistakes, gets angry at God, and even wants to give up at times. Ms. Bean's reactions were real as our own reactions at times. It made the story realistic in that way. In Ms. Bean's meetings with God, she finds the solutions to overcome. It's a process that lasts a lifetime, though hopefully we all grow in time if we faint not. I felt the use of stones for each of the five areas of growth brought out the child-like faith necessary to follow the Lord.

I'm a little disappointed with ending, as life doesn't always end up the way it does here. But the main point is trusting God whatever way it turns out. I'm glad this book came into my life at just this time, as it will help me through the difficult areas I am currently dealing with. Lessons to walk out to grow spiritually. Trusting God.

At the back of Kathryn's book is A Spiritual Guide where God is talking to us personally on the five lessons. It's detailed and personal, and helps us remember what we learned in the book. It will be a book I read more than one time, as a reminder of how to walk out these lessons in my own personal life.

More About the Author

When I was young I thought I had to sound like a great writer to be one. It was all so overwhelming; now I know I only need to sound like myself. My ideas come from two primary sources. My work might spark from the enlightening words of a friend, teacher or writing prompt. At other times, I am sitting in a very still space and the words I should write come to me like a powerful and glowing wind.

My favorite tool is the pen. Though computer keys get the words down quicker and easier, I like to put pen to paper, smell the ink, see the words as they are developed and renewed by new phrases or thoughts.

I enjoy traveling to wherever the character takes me. This often means even I am surprised and warmed at the outcome. In the end, when my writing is done, I like to watch the eyes of the reader whenever I can. Their reflective expression gives me the greatest glimpse into what my writing has become.

Before I was one, I loved to read books-or at least, pretend to. I couldn't walk yet but I would crawl to the bottom shelf for what I wanted. My Grandma says my books were placed near the floor for that very reason, and my mother speaks of me pulling my favorite book from the shelf and crawling back to the couch with the book safely in tow.

I would sit on the couch and pretend to read, speaking the language of some foreign diplomat-or perhaps, the tongue of angels, my mother wasn't quite sure which, and when I was done, I would crawl back to the shelf for another story.

When I am not writing I'm reading. I am an avid reader of the scriptures and books of spiritual merit. I have been married 32 years and enjoy teaching and working with youth and children-including my own three girls, three grand-daughters and grandson.

A published writer since 1987, I have published books, newspaper and magazine articles for teens and adults.
