5.0 out of 5 stars Sabbath Inspired Excellence
Having been named the #5 best release of 2008 by Decibal Magazine, this little heard album has become much more listened to of late. And for good reason too, as Conqueror is one fabulous album. In "Conqueror," we have some workmanlike heavy metal song stuctures, rhythms, chord changes, and so on burdened with abysmally bad lyrics. If you want an aural catalogue of heavy metal cliches, buy the CD. If you can understand enough English to read this review, however, stay away.

Having been named the #5 best release of 2008 by Decibal Magazine, this little heard album has become much more listened to of late. And for good reason too, as Conqueror is one fabulous album. Although heavily inspired by Sabbath, Indianapolis, IN based Gates of Slumber still manages to keep their own voice while laying down some excellent doom/stoner rock.

Vocalist and singer Karl Simon lays out some excellent guitar work across all the songs (he's a good singer too). The rest of the band, Jason McCash on bass and Bob Fouts on drums, are very capable as well, but it's Karl's show and his fuzzy power chords and his bombastic (and early Sabbath like) vocals are what this album is all about.

An excellent album I would recommend to anyone.

Man , I love this stuff !! A great hybrid of Doom laden old school classic Heavy Metal, filled with great tales of ancient mythological horror/fantasy ala Howard's Conan come to crushing musical life. This band lives and breathes the stuff that is real 80's metal yet with a fresh vitality and style all their own . One of favorite CDs of 2008 !! After hearing this awesome slab of Doom, I was instantly hooked, and tracked down all the rest of their discography and am very happy that I did . They truly are one my favorite discoveries in sometime.
